Although cultures and societies change, principles never change. They withstand the test of time. My personal thought is that religions are humankind's reflection of God, and when we put them in a historical perspective, we can learn very much from them.
Good luck. You're on the right track!

A literary classic has stood the test of time. People are still reading the Bible more than ever 2000 years or so after it was written. That shows the truths it contains are still important and relevant today.
Yesterday`s book of the month will probably not be still valued in ten years, let alone 2000. Read John`s gospel. It will only take a couple of hours. You will find it relevant to your life today.

Many of the things in the Bible still apply to us today. People have been suffering from many of the same problems since the beginning of civilization. Most of the new books printed are based on old or confusing philosiphies or just don't work. Many authors just give their own opinions and since everyone has one, it doesn't usually help.
Check out Romans 1; 20- 31 and 2 Timothy 3; 1-5. They describe the way people act in our times.

i don't think people change. we have similar ideas as we did back in those days. in the Bible is saying that the word is living and breathing. therefore i think that makes it aplicatble today. i'll give you an example. the Bible says that God does like for a man to wear womens clothings. now if you go to Scotland where they wear dresses (kilts) that is very manly. in North American that is very unmanly to wear anything other than pants. so the Bible is aplicable for the Schotish. and the Bible is aplicable for the American even though we are different and what we consider women's attire is different.
also Bible prophecy is being fullfilled all the time. like the Jews returning to their homeland. God knows the future doesn't he? so can't he write a book that aplicable to future generations also?

Ever hear the saying, "History repeats itself"? Those old books tell stories about wrongs done, consequences that were incurred and the whole point is to teach you a lesson. Not unlike a parent telling you about mistakes they may have made and regrets they have for making them.
I don't care what religion you might be, but if you steal from me, I'm gonna be pretty ticked. You kill someone I love, my family is going to be looking for you. You mess with my husband, and I'm gonna get both of you....Do you get what I'm saying here?
Those old books are very useful and I like to read all of them. I love to study comparitive religions. They are more alike than most people are willing to admit.

Yes, they were written long ago. But you must remember that much of the issues they address are present in all ages of human history. Greed, lust, hate, murder, etc.
The historical texts CAN be extrapolated as simply interesting history by the atheist, but even an atheist can see that there IS a "bigger picture" behind it.

The Bible is the inspired Word of God. It is as relevant today as it was thousands of years ago. It is the blueprint of God's plan for us, of how we are to live, and how we are to receive eternal life in Heaven.
If you believe that God is the creator of everything, that He created you, me, and everything around us, than no, the Bible isn't outdated. If you don't believe in God, maybe it's time you picked up a Bible, and rethink your thoughts.

I don''t know about the others, but God inspired men to write the Torah and the Bible, and God has no time, which thus makes them timeless and for all times
