Scanners (like printers) can be funny creatures. Click my computer > click on Control Panel > Click System > go to the Hardware tab > click on the Device Manager button > scan down the list and search for an external device such as your scanner. Once found, click on it. If it has a yellow ! mark then right-click on it and go to Properties > Click on the Update Drivers button.
NB: If you can not find it in Device Manager the you need to install the software that came with the scanner. If you haven't got it, try the manufacturer's website.

you would need to install a driver for the scanner to work... if you do not have the driver cd in hand try downloading one from the internet... easy as pie.. look for a link in google or any search engine you're bound to find lots of links to where you can download the driver just don't forget to specify the brand and version of the scanner when searching

You probably need software to get it to work. However usually the latest XPs have the software already installed. If it is an Older printer it may not work with XP.

If your computer is not working properly while you are working on it, it could be a problem with device drivers, hardware or software.
