The drill itself, does NOT hurt.. shot or not! It's the cavity inside, that hurts if its deep enough and close to the nerves.

If the cavity isnt deep, they wont numb you at all. Theres no need too. If its deep, then they will. They'll place a cotton tipped applicator into your mouth with a topical flavored gel on it, which has benzocaine on it. This agent numbs the gum surface. Then he'll proceed with the syringe or aka 'shot'! Either way, if your doctor is gentle and caring... you wont feel a thing! Shots dont have to hurt.

no it does not, my dentist usually put some numbing gel on my gums and then i don't even feel the shot! U won't feel anything, if it's big and deep cavity he may give you more shots! i have a sign with my dentist if i feel uncomfortable i just raise my left hand and he stops! The sound of drilling it's what some people find disturbing but i don't mind at all! Good luck :-)

my dentist prenumbs my gum first, then a pinch and gives me a shot, you dont feel the drill at if it a shallow cavity. if its deep or you are hard to deaden or if infection is present , you may need at least two shots,
there are dentist that use pills, or laughing gas .
the sooner you go, the less the dentist will have to drill. no sense putting it off.

It depends how far the Dr has to drill. If it's a small cavity, and just barely on the surface of the tooth, then it might just feel uncomfortable. But if he/she has to drill further, past the enamel, then yes it would definitely hurt (course that also depends on your pain tolerance). If your cavity hurts really bad, it's probably gone past the enamel and onto the dentin, and drilling would definitely hurt without anesthetic.

The drilling itself doesn't hurt. but sometimes the vibration from the drill can make your mouth/other teeth feel funny but nothing major. good luck at the dentist :)

It depends on the severity of the cavity. I have had my share of cavities and not once had they used Novocaine on me - as long as they stay away from the roots, your fine. If you want though, you can request the shot if you really feel like its necessary, but if the dentist does not give you the shot right away, it probably wont be needed.

You'll feel a pinch when they give you the shot, which has never been my favorite, but once that kicks in you won't feel anything. If you do start to feel anything, you just tap the dentist's hand, tell him, and he'll give ya another shot. It's no big deal...YOU'LL LIVE!...lol Good luck!

the drill. final time i went to the dentist i've got been given novacaine injected good at the back of my nostril and that i felt the needle up in the direction of my eye, and that i'm nonetheless afraid of the drill, the noise on my own makes me decide to pee my pants.

DON'T WORRY, BEFORE THE DRILL IS USED TO REMOVE THE CAVITY, THE DENTIST WILL MAKE SURE THE TOOTH IS NUMB AND THAT YOU FEEL NO PAIN.
