You are not weird. I was fearful of cats as well, thinking they would bite me or scratch me. I would visit a friend who had 2 sweet cats and when they would look at me I would look away very scared cause I thought they were going to attack me. About 6 months ago I moved to Singapore for business and have been feeling so lonely so a friend suggested I get a cat and as hesitant as I was I went to a shelter and adopted a 3 month old kitten. I can tell you now that they are not evil, they are very playful - my fear of cats is completely gone, now if I visit a friend with a cat I like to play with it and realize it was just a phobia but I was able to get over it. My cat is just the most loving creature and has never scratched me. Good luck getting over your fears.

You should not feel bad. Some people just don't like cats. Some find them sneaky, I say they're quiet. Some find them mean, I say they're playful.
If you have had a bad experience with a cat, I can understand that you don't like them. There are also many old wives tales about cats being evil and spawn of the devil and them being associated with evil witches and such. I know when we had our daughter, my husbands dad, who does not like cats, said we should get rid of the cat because it will suck the breath out of the baby. It was all I could do to keep from laughing.
When my husband needed physical therapy at home, the man who came to the house to give him the therapy was Indian (from India) and he did not like our cats nor our dog. We had to put the dog outside and I had to keep the cats away from him. He told me in India cats and dogs are nothing but vermin to be killed. The only thing good about cats was that they did keep the rat and mice population down, but that was it.
So, I would not feel bad that you don't like cats. I am terrified of spiders and freak when I see one. Why, I couldn't tell you.

Cats are not evil at all, but there are some bad ones, just like there are good and mean dogs - usually has to do with the treatment they have had from people. Kitties are very individual in their personalities, but most like to be petted starting at the head in one smooth and firm motion down to the tail. Never back and forth, they don't like their fur ruffled. They stare at you to decide who you are. Just try observing some for awhile without actually getting too close. If you know somebody with a really sweet calm cat, you might try to spend some time getting comfortable with being around it. They do rub their cheeks against you as a sign of acceptance. (Don't pet a cat's tummy if it lays down - they HATE that.) It's a worthy pursuit. Good luck.

Exposure therapy can work. It's where you expose yourself to the object or situation you fear over and over again. Planning is crucial, because this way YOU are in control.
Start by visiting a pet store or animal shelter where you can look at cats. Petsmart with an adoption center is a good choice, because they are behind glass. Do this over and over until you are comfortable with just looking. Then bring yourself to touch them. Start with the top of the head and behind the ears, because they often are fond of that, and you will not be considered a threat to them. Remind yourself that cats DO scratch, but it usually is a defense measure, so move slowly when petting cats. Repeat this until you are comfortable with touching them. Hope this helps.

Some fears just don't go away. Unless you meet them face 2 face. So the next time you see a cat walk towards it and I promise the cat is going to take off. Then at that point you would've regained your power. Cats aren't all vicious. Just sometimes hard to understand because they are so aloof. And maybe when you woke up to find a cat in your face you screamed and the cat freaked out and went on the attack. It probably just wanted to snuggle.

Fear of cats: An abnormal and persistent fear of cats which produces an undue anxiety reaction even though sufferers realize their fear is irrational. Sufferers of this phobia may fear not only the scratch or bite of a cat, but also the "evil mystique" of cats as depicted in Halloween folklore and such literary works as Edgar Allen Poe's "The Black Cat."
Fear of cats is termed "ailurophobia," a word derived from the Greek "ailouros" (cat) and "phobos" (fear). Alternate spellings: "Aelurophobia," "elurophobia." The Greek word "ailourous" has also given us the English word "Ailuroidea," a zoological term for a group of carnivorous animals including cats, hyenas and civets.
An alternate name for fear of cats: "Galeophobia". the only way to get rid of a fear is to confront it...

Ahhh, Cats, the Other White Meat! Yummm!
Hey, I am a Sasquatch! Give me a break!
Seriously, though ... Cats have been admired for countless ages! They are cunning and can fend for themselves.
Honestly, you need not fear them!
As to the weirdness factor ... I can't help you much there. It does seem weird for one to fear a cat! Unless you are a mouse or rat??? (Ohh, I rhymed)!
You suffer from Ailurophobia, a fear of cats! It is a real fear that many folk have!

First, don't worry what people think, second if you really want to get over this fear, start with a kitten and try holding it and move onto a cat without claws...really most cats are really sweet..it's too bad you had some troubles with some not-so-sweet ones!

it's not stupid, so don't worry...try to look at pics of cats... then if you cant, ask someone to show a picture of a cat to you from a distance. Then watch a show on cats and rate how scared you were. Then go to a pet shop where cats are sold and ask if you can hold one. But don't worry if you can't... people have different fears and different ways of handling it... this is one of the ways.

My Aunt is the same way, you don't have to like cats but they are nice pets and kittens are fun to play with. Getting over a irrational fear would be good. Do you know anyone with a friendly cat? Cats do have their own personalities you need to find a calm and loving one to relax with.
