I signed a contract to buy a car today (saturday). I decided I don't want the car and they are not open tomorrow. I heard there is a grace period of a day or two that you have to be able to cancel the contract? Does anyone know the laws? Is this true? Does anyone have a link of the laws of this?
Thanks in advance

Hi hun!
When you find the answer...let me know! Did the same thing today. Only, We love the car, just found out the dealer lied to us about the Blue Book on it, and now we paid too much for it.

There is NO right to return a car because you changed your mind.

There is NO right to return a car because you changed your mind.

There is NO right to return a car because you changed your mind.

I can not say this enough!!!

The 72 hours rule that everyone keeps talking about applies to in home sales. It does not apply when you go to a "normal place of business". It was designed to prevent people from being pressured into signing contracts just to get the salesman to leave their home. When you go to a place of business, you always have the option of walking out. You can not walk out of a sales situation in your own home.

When you take delivery of a vehicle, and drive it off the dealers lot, you own it!! The dealer is not required to take it back, and most likely will not. If he does, you will have to buy another vehicle from him, because he is not going to refund your money.

Did you actually take posession of the vehicle? Did you drive it off the lot, or did you just agree to buy it and pick it up next week. If you took the car off the lot, you are the owner! If not, you should be able to cancel!

Not every state gives you three days to cancel.

Some do, but only if you signed the contract in your home.

However, some states don't give you three days because you went to the dealer and bought something. In many states, that sale is final. The dealer may decide to take the deal out as a good faith type thing, but dont count on it.

Good luck!

I live in Indiana, and you have 3 business days to cancel a contract. Go to the dealer Monday morning, cancel the contract in writing (just take the letter with you), ask for your money back and there should be no problem. They may try to talk you out of it, but just say NO. Refuse to accept the car.

Read the contract including all the fine print. Follow the terms of the contract. That's what you signed.

Since you didn't give anything down or take the car, chances are you can back out with no repercussions. The dealer COULD sue you and probably win. Its doubtful they would. They WILL call repeatedly to try to get you to follow through with the deal.

The law calls for a "cooling-off period", usually 2 WORKING days, so you have until Monday for sure.

the grace period is an urban myth
if you gave them a check, see if you can stop payment on it, but they could sue you if they so elected, although they will probably just let it go
