I think you mean morality. Anyway, religion is a means to support the ideas that gives one a reason for life. A weakness, I say, but still a means to an end. As well, religion gives the powers that be, especially in the past, a means of control. Fear is your only god, and that is the message. Don't do what we say, you suffer forever. Now that is a good selling point. Religion is, as the quote says, the opium of the people.

There is NO benefit to religion. Religion Kills and always will. Religion binds and confines. Many are offended at this statement but this does not make it any less true. Religion as is known, is an abomination to God because it creates false witness and does not allow the work of The Holy Spirit to flow. Our Lord God will not be cornered & brought low so that man's interpretations can become high...Woe to those who stand above The Word!

Actually, love and compassion and empathy are all religious concepts. They originated from religion. Prior to that, it was (literally) a jungle out there.
Religions lead people to God, and they also serve as outstanding charitable and humanitarian organizations.
In particular, the Roman Catholic Church (to which I belong) is the single largest charitable provider in the world. Bar none.

Where do you think all these morals come from? They evolved from a single emotion millions of years ago and became morals and basic life experience? Everything you mention is Holy Spirit 101. I am going to bed.
May the basic life experience richly bless you.

Nothing. Basic life will provide it all without dogma. But, religion is a call to organize our quest to understand the mystery of our short being with others... life is into agreeable social institutions.
Hope you are too.
Yours truly,

I find your question interesting, especially since research has shown that sincerely religious people are happier, more peaceful, handle tragedy better, have better marriages, are healthier, etc. In your list of characteristics, you forgot FAITH, HOPE, TRUST, PRAYER, GODLY HELP and others that are instilled in people through religion. Those are the qualities that give religious folks a foot up over others who are not religious.

...I am a born-again believer in Christ, and here are some of the benefits of being a Christian: sins forgiven; God is now my Father; the Holy Spirit indwells me, empowers me to do right, and helps me to understand and apply the Scriptures; I have a home in Heaven; I have many brothers and sisters of all races with whom I share rich fellowship; fear of death is gone; and I will see many loved ones again who have died in Christ.
...Some say Christianity is a crutch, but I say no, it is a whole life support system, with retirement benefits that are out of this world.
...I echo another fellow's comments, not religion, but Jesus Christ.

Its like asking some guy, what is the benefit of loving your grilfriend. Its a stupid question for those who follow faith and even stupid for true believers. I agree there are some foolish people who just blindly follow and make us feel that faith is nonsense, but i dont really think so.

It's all in the FAITH, not just religion.
Faith in Jesus Christ----
and ethically speaking, God IS love--He is everything good and true and pure.
Satan brings out hate, sadness, worry, fear.
But God has given us a spirit of hope.
ALL that IS good, IS God.

Its great for starting wars so it benefits the arms industry and its investors.
Also people of low intelligence might go mad contemplating the mysteries of existence, religion provides a simplistic solution that keeps them calm.
It provides an income for priests nuns mullahs, televangelists etc who otherwise would have to turn to crime as they have no marketable skills.
It provides a great source of humour to the educated.
