I am from the country and here a lane would be considered a narrow passage between two houses or such. A street would be the main way for lanes or alleys. An avenue is a wide street. A road is simply a passage between two distant points. But if you are in the city it may differ. ( Interstates with odd numbers such as I-75 run north and south. Interstates with even numbers such as I-20 run east and west.)

A street runs East and West. An avenue Runs North and South. A road is not normally a through way. And a lane is normally a short road.

me think mostly just name.

But in application me think,

road is nice long way to travel between villages.

Street is road inside village wide enough to herd four water buffalo side by side.

Avenue have middle thing with trees in grass more narrow can only get two water buffalo side by side.

Lane is very narrow can only get one buffalo on lane.

Hope that explains good so you understand now.

UGH.........
