Believe it or not, I have headr such a thing myself. It is not true. Constantly covering one's hair does not make one's hair fall out and more or less.
Male pattern baldness, on the other hand, is the usual culprit.

Yes, many devout Jewish men get bald spots -- from a genetic tendency for baldness which is a female-chromosome characteristic.
Hats and yamikas don't cause baldness, though.

That "thingy" is spoke of as a yarmulke. A yarmulke isn't worn to cover up bald spots in Jewish adult males (besides the reality that it in many circumstances covers bald spots, with the aid of fact they're worn on that element of the top). Jewish adult males placed on yarmulkes with the aid of fact a commandment in the Torah is that adult males can not walk outdoors with out their head lined. throughout the time of history, the yarmulke has stepped forward; it was once extra like a turban-like concern. in modern circumstances, Orthodox Jewish adult males placed on yarmulkes, collectively as Hasidic Jews placed on black hats or straimels (furry hats) to cover their heads. Repeat: Yarmulkes are actually not for masking up bald spots, although they could be used as such. they're used considering's a commandment for adult males to cover their heads.
