Come to Sturgis, SD and I'll do your hair!!! LOL
I'm so sorry to hear that you and so many people here have not had good luck with going to a salon. (This breaks my heart to hear!!) ;..>( It shouldn't be that way, but unfortunately there are many cosmetologists who do not fully understand color theory and how to determine a persons best colors. It takes training in color analysis and many times it isn't taught in the beauty colleges, it is something they have to get on their own once they get out of school! They have to seek out the training. Maybe you are getting someone who is fresh out of school????
If you have the wrong color on (be it clothes, hair color, make up...whatever) it can make you look tired, washed out, emphasize lines, blemishes and put circles under your eyes. The right color brightens your skin, adds color to your cheeks, and makes your eyes pop. So since you say the color of your hair makes your "face look dirty" that tells me you do indeed have the wrong color. But sometimes it is simply a matter of changing the TONE. For example, I can wear a chocolaty brown hair color, or I can wear a red as long as it is a COOL red. As soon as a red goes off tone and starts turning orangey or if my brown starts getting a copper hue or a golden hue it makes me look ickey!! If I go with blond it HAS to be a cool blond...no gold or yellow tones can be in it! I'm a cool-toned person, I have to stay away from warm-toned stuff!)
I suppose the best way to find a good stylist/colorist in your area is to observe people when you go to the mall or grocery store or doctor's office. If you see a hairstyle/color you like, OR if they just look really "put together", ask them who does their hair. Then, if you get some names, call and set up a consultation. Find out if they have training in color analysis. Find out if they go to hair shows and trainings regularly. Some of the "top salons" will have weekly or monthly trainings and they need models on a regular basis. Usually, they are "up" on what cuts are best for certain shapes and can determine the best color for you as well.
Go to www.hairportal.com There you will find all kinds of sites to help you find a hairstyle you will like.
Hope this helps you for future reference! I hope you find a great stylist that you love (and everyone else out there!!!!!) Just communicate! And even if you feel like you aren't communicating well, just keep talking! A good stylist is trained to listen, and as long as you keep talking and don't get frustrated trying to express yourself and quit, it helps us a bunch! Because there are different things that you will say that will help to paint a picture of what you want. (A "picture is worth a thousand words" type of thing!!) IF you get stuck in a chair of a stylist who is egotistical and won't listen, just get up and walk out!

I've had this same problem for years and am sorry to say that the best solution I've found is making small changes myself. It seems impossible to communicate the cut or color you're visualizing (even if you bring photos) to your stylist. But if you're determined, I'd go on the recommendation of a friend who has your face shape and a similar style.
You could try temporary hair dyes (lasting through 24 shampoos) since it's easier to play around with the color. That's worked pretty well for me too. Good luck!

If you have dirty blonde hair you should just highlight it with warm blonde highlights. Don't color it. They are probably putting on the wrong color for your skin tone.
It is best to cut out pictures and take them with you and make sure they understand what you want and ask if they are able to do that. Go to people that have experience in what you want too.
I used to do my own highlights, I had dirty blonde hair too and they looked really natural and I got lots of compliments from men and women. I used L'Oreal highlighting, the one that had two different color of blonde in it. Made the highlights look natural. The key is doing small strands not taking big chuncks of hair.
