Six-year-old stallion Delta Blues was the winner of the November 7, 2006 $5 million Melbourne Cup at Flemington. Delta Blues was ridden by Japanese jockey Yasunari Iwata, trained by Katsuhiko Sumii and owned by Katsumi Yoshida.

Delta Blues finished a close third to Melbourne Cup favourite Tawqeet at Caulfield, beaten a long neck and a short neck, with Pop Rock running on nicely to finish seventh, only 1-1/2 lengths from the winner.

Delta Blues is a tough horse, who won the cup despite its jockey was riding in Australia for the first time. The 32-year-old Yasunari Iwata has ridden nearly as many winners in Japan as the distance of the Cup - just shy of 3200 - and beat internationally renowned jockeys Douglas Whyte, Kieren Fallon and Michael Kinane, as well as Sydney star Darren Beadman, to win the World Super Jockey Series last year.

Delta Blues (デルタブルース) is a Japanese horse best known for winning the 2006 Melbourne Cup. It was the third non-Australian and the first Japanese horse to win the Cup. In doing so it beat Pop Rock, another Japanese horse, also trained by Katsuhiko Sumii.

Prior to the race, stable spokesman Keita Tanaka characterised Delta Blues as a "lazy horse", and trainer Sumii characterised him as "tough".

Delta Blues was virtually unknown until it won a spectacular upset victory in the Kikuka Sho. He beat Heart's Cry and Cosmo Bulk then. Delta Blues placed third in the Japan Cup in November 2004, and third in the Caulfield Cup in 2006.

Delta Blue achievements are :
>>Winner of the 2004 Kikuka Sho (JPN-GI, Japanese St. Leger)
>>Winner of the 2004 Best Horse by Home-Bred Sire JRA award.
>>Winner of the 2006 Melbourne Cup

Delta Blues was sired by Dance in the Dark with the dam Dixie Splash (sire Dixieland Band). The breeder was Northern Farm.
Dance in the Dark won the Kikuka Sho (Japanese St. Leger), and was the son of "magnificent US-bred Sunday Silence, the ill-fated sire who has been unmatched in Japanese breeding history".♥

that's what i think of will take place: The win will visit a longshot - grasp O'Reilly at 40/a million odds whilst it wins. Zipping will make a mistake on the 1st hurdle and just about united statesa. its rider, and on the 5th hurdle, the rider would be unseated and the pony out of the race, nevertheless the pony will shop on racing riderless to the tip leaping over hurdles as he is going. useful would be in the lead till the previous few furlongs, with each and all of the solid in 2d place. each and all of the solid will area previous to pass into the lead. even though, grasp O'Reilly options up velocity, and is going thundering previous to get into the lead in the dazzling furlong, and after a image end, the result would be grasp O'Reilly because of the fact the winner!
