I need them in halves not crumpling bits.

Should I roast them first?

The best way is w/ (not kidding here) a pecan cracker. You lay your pecan in it sideways, and it squeezes it from the two pinty ends, perfectly cracking the shell and leaving the nutmeats in near-perfect halves every time.

But if you are using a nut cracker by hand, just squeeze gently, rolling the pecan and crackign in 3-4 places. Be sure to get the bitter stuff out of the cracks of the top of the pecan, or you'll be sorry!

No, do not roast first. If you have a nut cracker you can use it. Squeeze it gently so as not to break the nut meats. Or you can take 2 pecans and place them against each other in your hands and squeeze.

Place your cracker on the seam of the nut for best results
and squeeze gently
as I'm sure you already know, too much force just crushes them!

they are very hart to shell. you actually need a special nut cracker for the job. The are kinda pricy, but worth it in the long run,

I just take two pecans and put them beside each other in my hand and crack them.
