I have a pretty large vocal range. HOWEVER, I think a duet with a boy would be quite fun to do, especially because I really enjoy singing love songs or preparing something like this with another person. I COULD do something with another girl, but when it comes to singing, boys are the ones I feel more comfortable with (plus, not many girls want to do duets for choir this year). And if I do it with a boy, it might be hard to find one, because I think they're already paring up. Also, I'm not so good at talking to the cuter, more talented boys that would easily get me in (although one of them said "I can't audition w/ you, I already promised my other friend. But if I could, I would easily get in with your good voice singing along (no, he doesn't like me. he already has a gf)!" I really don't know what to do for this audition: I have plenty of time to prepare, but I don't want to leave this as something that, at the very last minute, is something I finally pay attention to. Please help!

The purpose of the audition is to hear how well you sing, the tone of your voice, if you can read music and if you can harmonize. You need to do a solo performance.

well, being an aspiring choir director, i do have a couple things to say. Now, the "cuter" part, should not matter, though i don't know you're director, so maybe it does...? Anyways, preparing a duet is nice, and it adds another element to the audition, as well as shows that you can sing with other people, it brings in the idea of interaction. However, if you are confident in your abilities to sing solo, and a duet partner seems to be hard to come by, I would suggest the solo. The ideal would be to prepare a solo piece to fall back on, and continue your search for a talented male partner, if worse comes to worse, you'll still have a solo piece, prepared that you should have no problem with.

Okay if I were you I would go to a guy and ask him to sing with me, and guys feel flattered when they are offered things like that even more when a great singer like you asks them. Meanwhile, when you are singing partner hunting I would suggest you choose a song as if you were going to audition solo, but also look for a duo that you would also like to do with a guy, and maybe you think I'm out of my mind but from my personal point of view I consider this a preparation done with time and at the same time singing different songs at the same time helps your voice develope in a tremenduous way (believe me I have been going to singing class since 2 years ago) and variety is good as to train other notes, etc. Perform with another girl could be difficult because USUALLY girls are very competitive when performing on stage and between boys too, but with a person of the different sex is more pacific and doesn't seem that competitive and big of a deal, so that's why I support the idea of you asking a guy to perform with you. If you don't get a partner then don't worry because it seems that you can amaze a whole crowd even if you are just singing without any kind of instrument, just your voice. Plan things and go and ask guys to be your partner and if they say no then you will make them repent when you sing on stage. Be confident, and wish you luck!!
Someone to watch over me...is a great song.

SOLO!

You are selling yourself and your voice. Don't rely on someone else to carry your audition. (if you were auditioning for me I would see a duet as weak.)

Singing solo shows that you can stay on key all on your own. And if you can do that then chances are you'd do fine in a duet. But using a duet as an audition just screams security blanket to me.

Do a solo, you'll stand apart from all the shy girls who require a partner to sing with. Good luck!

I think you should do a solo. Find something that you really like that shows off your range of voice - & practice it - putting emotion into it & changing the volume of your rendition as appropriate to the words. Think about the words you are singing as you sing so that you will be almost acting out the concepts of the lyrics.

Watch Mr Holland's Opus as he directs the beautiful young girl in singing "Someone to Watch Over Me." and use what he is teaching

Good luck.

I think you should sing a Natalie Cole song by yourself. She has a very good vocal range and sounds very good.
