Here is the modern method of canonization:
In order to allow greater objectivity and less emotion, no petition for sainthood can be made until at least 5 years after the candidate’s death.
+ Diocesan Investigation +
A diocese, parish, religious congregation, or association asks the bishop of the diocese in which the candidate died to open the investigation. After Vatican approval, the bishop forms a diocesan tribunal.
Witnesses are called before the tribunal to recount the candidate’s heroic exercise of Christian virtues. All documents regarding the candidate must be gathered.
At this point he is entitled to the title of Servant of God.
+ Vatican Investigation +
All documentation is passed on to the Congregation for the Causes of Saints at the Vatican.
The cause undergoes an examination by nine theologians.
If passed, the cause is for examined by the Congregation.
If passed, the cause is presented to the Pope for approval. A decree is published and read publicly.
+ Beatification +
A miracle attributed to the Servant of God is necessary.
The miracle must be proven through an appropriate investigation and another decree is issued.
Then the Pope decides on beatification.
With beatification, the candidate receives the title of Blessed.
+ Canonization +
Another miracle occurring after beatification is needed for canonization (sainthood), attributed to the Blessed’s intercession.
This miracle must again be proven through an appropriate investigation.
Papal infallibility is involved with canonization.
The Blessed acquires the title of Saint."
+ With love in Christ.

The above posts accurately describe how Dominic Savio was officially recognized (canonized) as a saint. However, he actually "became" a saint the same way anyone else does - by dying in the state of grace, and entering heaven. Everyone who does that is a saint. The rest of the process came later, but didn't actually change his status in heaven, only confirmed it and officially recognized it.

There's a whole long process. First off, he had to have a certain number of miracles credited to him after his death, and the Vatican has to recognize them as genuine. First he was beatified. (so he'd be called Blessed Dominic Savio) and then he became a saint.
I'm really sorry if you were asking for his exact story, because I don't know it.

Catholic.org also has a good description at http://www.catholic.org/saints/saint.php?saint_id=43
St. Dominic Savio lived such a pious life to the age of 15 (when he died) that he was declared a saint.

In the year 993, Canonization of dead saints introduced.
"Sing unto the LORD, O ye saints of his, and give thanks at the remembrance of his holiness." (Psa 30:4 KJV)
This psalm was written about 1300 years before the Roman Catholic system came into being. God calls His true believers saints and does not recognize human canonization of anyone.
THE NEW TESTAMENT CLEARLY TEACHES THAT ALL CHRISTIANS ARE SAINTS. SEE ACTS 9:13,32,41; 26:10; ROM. 8:27; 12:13; 15:25,31; 16:2,15; 1 COR. 6:1,2; 14:33;
16:1,15. ETC.)
BUT WHILE GOD DELIGHTS IN MAKING THINGS SIMPLE, THE ROMAN CATHOLIC AUTHORITY WORKS DILLIGENTLY TO MAKE THING COMPLICATED.
All Christians are saints but the Pope says only very special dead Catholic people qualify to be called "saints".
All Christians are priests but the Pope decided to reserve the title of "priest" to worn by church leaders only.
"Jesus has made us to be a kingdom, priests to His God and Father to Him be the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen." Revelation 1:6
"You have made them (all Christians) to be a kingdom and priests to our God; and they will reign upon the earth." Revelation 5:10
"But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God’s own possession, so that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; " 1 Peter 2:9

His Holiness was a gift from God. I think God wanted the young people to see that someone who was very young could be very Holy too. He would try to break up fights on the playground and get very upset that kids were being so mean to each other and then there was the sickness thing. He really went through it, but remained Holy throughout.
