Krav Maga is practical, and is OUTSTANDING for anyone desiring to learning defensive tactics. It is simple enough that a small woman can render her assailant defenseless, in short order.

The single best self defence is running. If you are not there, your attacker cannot hurt you. If someone is comming at you with a knife/gun/glass, run faster. Always make sure someone knows where you are, and what time you should be back. If youre not where you should be, or youre late, people who know you will start looking for you. Try not to attract anyones attention. If your (possible) attacker doesnt notice you, you wont be attacked. Not martial art will make you invunerable to attack. If you want a better chance of defending yourself, have a go at every type of self defence you can find and see which suits you better. I, personally, prefer Taekwondo. It has a lot to offer for street self defence, as when its taught correctly you should be instructed when/how/what to do over and over and over again. Repatition is the key. Over time your techniques will come into play without you thinking about them. As for the idea of "antifreeze". Thats just the tripple F problem. In a stress situation its a case of Fight, Flight or Freeze. Freezing as caused by not knowing what to do and so you keep cycling throught the available ideas, if you find yourself in this situation MAKE YOUR MIND UP - freezing is the worst thing that can happen. Fighting you way out or running away will hurt less.

Krav Maga's a good start, but there is NO "best" Martial Art or fighting discipline out there.
You just have to research the schools you think you wanna attend, and find out some background on them (making sure they're not a McDojo's type of school) and see if the instructor(s)'s TEACHING style is comfortable and not overbearing.
if you go into a class and you get the feeling that it's not a good class (like everyone's afraid to mess up, and their on edge) then find another place to train at, try to keep it within a 15 minute drive if possible, you can usually find a good school or discipline within that mile radius, that'll be worth the drive.
It's not the Discipline, but the individual and the individual's training ethic, that makes the difference.

Krav is good.
I wouldnt nutride the BJJ scene though. It may be a good art, but it is subject to its limitations. anything is only as strong as its weakest link. and grappling's weakness is that it only works if the opponent is alone. multiple attackers will make years of grappling redundant. that doesnt mean dont do it, but just be aware of other factors that need exploring.
Any CQC (Close Quarters Combat) system will be good, but research the instructor. too many scammers in this RBSD (reality based self defense) area.
Muay Thai is convenient and vicious, and if you go 3 times a week you will be able to hold your own easily in 6 months, and after a year you will have the confidence that will carry you through life. good for sparring practice too, as it is a big part of instruction. bag work and sparring, bag work and sparring... elbows are great to master as well. I speak highly of this as it opened my eyes to the set backs of arts that dont use elbows.
every art should use elbows in my opinion, and the fact they dont says two things to me:
1) they are sport orientated before self defense
2) they are not offering true self defense
now MT is sport orientated too, but destroying an opponent in a quick and vicious way is the goal, and all body parts are used to do this.

Depends:Mostly on Time - you wanna learn quick sure krav maga/mui thai is #1
You can wait? be a grandmaster wing chun/choy le fut about 10yrs, (u can look after yourself in 3-4yrs though), you wanna be the best - train boxing,BJJ,mui thai, supplement with x-train gym and other styles - but beware; you wanna be the best, you will risk injuries, for every ufc champ is a hundred ppl with long term injuries, and then an injured guy can get *** wooped by a nobody.. My advice, train smart, train hard, avoid injury - wing chun; become a master for life, not just for your youth... (but train hard in wing chun/maybe mix wit boxing a little - DONT get injured ok :)
side note- chinese ma are actualy good, they just require good foundations, so u gotta be patient to make it work, or else leave it alone and go modern...

Ju Jitzu....All of the popularity of the "Ultimate Fighting" was brought about because of the Gracie family. Horace Gracie is the father and creator of this very young yet extremely effective fighting style. The UFC about 15 years ago offered $100,000 to anyone who could beat a Gracie, didn't happen. They own that tournament and any fighting style that dares tempt it's versatility. It has taken the very best from every where in the world, including techniques you and I have never heard of. It is very demanding on the student, but Ju Jitzu will turn anyone into a force to be reckoned with.

FAST Defense...it is reality based training working through the adrenal dump that occurs in all verbal and physical confrontations. His course was just voted as the number 1 womens self defense course in Black Belt Magazine but women aren't the only ones going through the course. Bill Kipp is the instructor but has certified many all over the states and abroad. Many Martial Arts studios may teach a traditional form but will suppliment their studios teaching this. I saw video taping of multi-level black belts in their first fights going against a padded assailant but had never trained under adrenal stress and they didn't stand a chance. You can learn more in this program in 4 hours than years in a dojo!
