There is a multitude of video players out there. You need to make sure that you have one that supports the file type. If you look up the extension (for example filetype.mov) you would know that this is a Quicktime file and would need a player that supports the ".mov" file type extension.

Look up your file extension and go to:
http://www.download.com/Audio-Video-Software/2001-2025_4-0.html?tag=dir

At the search option on the top type in the the word video and the file extension type and see what it lists. Look for a free one with a good review (that does not have adware - if it does the editors will almost always not that in the review).

PS: if it does not play when you have the right player try another file with the same extension to make sure the file does not have a problem.

The problem could be that the file is corrupted or you need a diffrent player
