If you have an open mind, like discovery, culture, and interaction with people, you will be hooked on China. Beijing indeed has some pollution problems (desertification of the Gobi desert and increased water consumption and waste generation), but it is nevertheless far from being boring, being one of the most interesting cities on earth, rich in history and culture, and like many other Chinese cities, a fascinating mix of old and ultra-modern. Tons of things to see and do, depending on your interests, whether it is clubbing or visiting museum or looking at the architecture. I personally just love to hang around with friends and people-watch in the trendy areas. There are of course those not-to-miss places such as the Forbidden City, the Summer Palace, a section of the Great Wall nearby, and the great shopping markets.
Preparations for the Olympics are well underway. I will be there myself next February and again for the Olympics.

You wouldn't believe how much work is being done for the Olympics. This will be the best Olympics ever. The Chinese are taking it very very seriously. Many or all of the big factories have been or are being relocated to other cities. They are starting a campaign to put all the signs into good English, no, not just street signs, EVERY sign. They are building stadiums and apartment buildings and hotels and roads and train lines and motorways and rivers. If something gets in the way they knock it down; if they need something just there, they build it just there.
If a road doesn't go in quite the right direction then they make it go in the right direction: Left, right, straight, curved, up, or down.
I'm not sure what the first thing is, but if you have time pay a visit to the Capital Museum, it is first class. Avoid the National Museum, it's pathetic.

no matter if US could boycott the Beijing Olympics is an argument for the U. S. Olympic Committee to settle on. and that i do not imagine that is of their time table for communicate. Why could they. They were on the authentic of the leather-depending board very last Olympic. It they boycott and pull out, China will honestly occupy the authentic position. i don't believe of this may sit down nicely with the time-honored US human being. that is purely the media and those who imagine that the international is too non violent see the Olympic as an probability for them to create issue by shouting "boycott" withoud understanding or being concerned for the effect.

First off, GET OUT OF BEIJING. It's polluted and boring.
GO WEST. Xian and Sichuan are nice, Xinajiang is cool; go to Urumqi and then head west on the silk road. Good food, nicer people.
