I think that god is a Yankees fan--only kidding. i think you make a great point and ask a question i asked a while ago. mine was why do fans pray in the stands during the game. I don't know if it's a sacrilege but it's certainly silly. we credit god with always being on our side, and that, my friend, is about as egotistical as you can get.

You know, normally I'd agree with you but when I was living in Oklahoma, they have this rag newspaper called the Daily Oklahoman and every day I'd read all these mean comments OU's head coach, Schnellenberger, would make about his team; like they were talentless and all this rot. This was back in 95-96. Anyhow, they fired him (good riddance, wherever he is) and hired this John Blake guy who was really nice but wasn't doing much either and in Oklahoma they don't care if you lose every other game as long as you beat Texas. I was feeling so sorry for these guys who went out every day and worked their hearts out, wanting so badly to be a part of the great Oklahoma tradition (the Wilkinson and Switzer years) and losing game after game and so the night before they played Texas in 97, I prayed my heart out for those guys. Miracle of miracles, they won the game and if I had it all to do over again, I would have started praying my heart out for those guys in 95. There are some situations that I think it perfectly appropriate to pray for your team to win and this was one of them.

Only if that is the only thing you pray for. If you are just seeking personal gain through prayer or God than it is wrong. But if you sincerely believe, and spend time with God in other ways, it is not. In other words, you can't "use" God.

I think it's just stupid.
Worse than this is when an army Chaplin prays for victory. Asking God to help them kill the enemy's that Jesus asked us to love.
Seems a bit conflicted to me.

By praying we place our requests before Him, like when a child asks their mom for a bb gun for Christmas, He knows what is best for us just like that childs mother knows what is best for them, so if He says no just like that mother probably would, it doesn't mean we aren't love and that we shouldn't ask for things, it just means no. He wants to give His children their requests but He waits for the right time if it is His will, just like that mother would probably wait for her child to grow some before giving him something He wasn't prepared to handle.

I believe it is inappropriate to pray for victory on the athletic field. Those who involve themselves in prayer for that reason have missed the boat on prayer.

No, only praying to God for something evil will not work.

We should pray in all things but, we should be able to accept it with Thanksgiving when he says "No" too.
