He is normally healthy and when he got up this morning he coughed a little and gagged like, never has happened before. He then went out and drank water, ate and was fine. I was gone most of the day, my dad said he was coughing and gagging some throughout the day but not a ton, he fed him dinner at about 5pm and ate ok. He was gagging again and has thrown up 3-4 times since 6:00. He is throwing up food and mucas, whitish foam.drinking ok and acts ok, but then just starts gagging and throws up.current on shots and has not been around any poisons or chemicals.he has been grouchy for the last few months, like he growls at me two year old if he disturbs his nap or something.don't think it connected but not sure now. Any advice?

He may have some irritation to his trachea, like with kennel cough, or an upper respiratory tract infection. When they are coughing, dogs can trigger their gag reflex. Then they will vomit. Most of the time, they are otherwise ok.
I would monitor him closely and get him in to see a vet soon. He may need some antibiotics and cough suppressants. Also watch your other dogs, if you have any. When you take him in to your vet, you can ask about the behavior problems.

Your lab could have a partial obstruction somewhere in his throat or stomach. Partial obstructions are easy to miss because they allow water or soft foods to pass but not everything. Sometimes things don't really get caught up until there is enough swelling. That could account for the change in behavior, something may have been in there for a while. He probably will not be able to bring it up on his own. You should make a vet appointment then try a product called Laxatone. It will grease up the digestive so maybe it will pass. If the symptoms subside before the appointment you can cancel it.

My cousin's lab got real sick and she couldn't figure out why. The vet x-rayed the dog and discovered that the dog had eaten a foreign object. The dog had to be operated on and the object removed. Her dog had eaten a tennis ball. Then I heard of a dog who ate a panty hose and messed himself up. This sounds like a serious situation so hurry and get your dog to the vet.

It sounds like he has something caught in his throat- take him to a vet ASAP, and make sure you mention the gagging- have them take a good look in the back of his mouth to see if there's something lodged there.
Either way, dogs can go downhill quickly if they can't keep fluids down, so he may need an IV to keep him hydrated. Hurry!

I encourage you to take him to the veterinarians office asap. I just lost my yellow lab dog last month due to a pneumonia. He was hospitalized for one week. He never did recover. I let him get too bad before I acted on it. He weighed 73 lbs. in July when I took him in for shots and when he went in to the hospital he weighed 67 lbs. I still think of him daily. I miss him so. Don't put it off. I thought he had a bone lodged in his throat. He was our companion and a great friend to our family.

Do you give him any bones? He could have something caught in his throat. If he keeps doing this, please take him to the Vet. He must be very uncomfortable.
And if his behavior has changed over the past few months, I think he should have a good check up. He could have something growing in his throat, too. Good luck with your dog!
