Besides the blatently obvious....i tried and the beer just leaks out, its not waterproof I guess....

It depends on the size of the opening. If it's for large gumballs, I would fill it with these Italian chocolates called Baci (means kisses). They are wonderful and come with messages, like fortune cookies.

White gumballs with a number printed on each one(1-9). I would have a daily number, and if you got that number you would get a prize!

this one time a friend of mine filled my gumball machine with catfood and i was so astonished!
i was like....oh my god!
i do not know why she does not realize its purpose and i felt offended even more than a usual bubblegum machine owner because i personally made it in shop class.
i got a B on it.
but i still love her....just don't understand her neglect.

You should be able to silicone it to hold fluid (or even line with plastic). Try turning it into a small aquarium/fish tank.
