My job consists of talking on the phone a lot! But this problem makes it really embarassing when I am in the middle of a conversation and I lose my voice or sound very groggy. I mean, it's really bad. I end up clearing my throat but it just comes back. I've also tried drinking water... that works a little bit but not much. Does anyone have suggestions?

I use Mucinex everyday ( it contains guaifenesin, which is the ingredient in many cough medicines) it loosens up the flem so that it can move away faster. Drink lots of water on it.

You should look for a voice therapist. The way you use your voice is what is causing it. If you don't change your habit it won't go away, it tends to get worse.
throat medicine or drops won't help for they don't reach where your problem is - the vocal chords. I'm a speech therapist, I know that what is causing you trouble may be allergic, or other respiratory problem, but it is also that you make much too effort when you use your voice.

I drink really hot tea to clear my throat. Green tea or mint seems to be the best. The reason you get flemmy is the humidity. Try making your bedroom more humid.

Sounds like you may have allergies. I would go to a docter to find out what's wrong. Then, your doc'll give you some medicine to help you out!
