I believe that strictly speaking it should only be installed on a single desktop and a single laptop

It is supposed to be only installed on 1 computer at a time. first off are all the computers connected to the internet? If so when you install it then it will let you know it is already in use. If they are not all connected to the internet then you can disconnect from the internet the 1 computer that already has it installed, load it onto the new computer, when it goes to check authenticity you may need to call a number if there is a problem. When you speak to them just let them know you had to reformat the hard drive. How did you get it onto the other computers? XP only gives you 30 days to activate if I remember correctly, during activation is when you will find out if there is an issue. I had an issue where I installed one of my computer with one of my three XP disc, went through all the loading and during activation i found out I had put the wrong XP disc in and had to find my other disc to get it installed correctly.

You're probably talking about a Windows CD, aren't ya?

Yeah.

Um, there is an endless amount of times that you can install it. No limits, except if the CD breaks. But what I recommend is waiting for Microsoft Windows Vista.

You can get away with it two or three times. Then, large, ugly men from Microsoft will show up at your door and smash your computers with clubs made from old Commodore 64s.

Unless you paid for a bulk license, once on a desktop and once on a laptop.
Using it on a second desktop is a violation of the EULA.
