Normally surgeons and high paying physcian specialties (cardiology) make the most, with salaries in excess of $500,000 per year depending on where their practice is located.

Established well known retina surgeons are perhaps the highest paid professionals in medicine. There are plenty of patients needing eye surgery and the cost of performing this kind of surgery doesn't come very cheap but relatively speaking the duration of the operation isn't that long, at least for the majority of the more commoner disorders, hence the reason for the long list of patients a retina surgeons see each day.

One superstar in the field is noted for bringing in $11m a year. He took over the business from his father and expanded it beyond recognition. This is rather unusual though. It was already established in a prime location which contributed largely to its successful outcome. Most of the top retina surgeons bring in around $2 million a year.

Other top paying specialities include neurosurgery (not so much now) heart surgery and orthopeadics. Plastics is not as high as you would think. But it does attract the most attention from the media so you can be forgiven for thinking that.

Interventional cardiologists can also bring in a 1m a year if they work hard and accept as many patients as possible. Stenting procedure is relatively short and thanks to Americas fast food culture a huge number of people need to have their clogged arteries unblocked. Interventionalists also the reason for the drop in salaries of heart surgeons. Before these procedures were performed under radiographic guidance, cardiac surgeons were principally in charge of seeing to Americas high cholestrol problem and they made a very good living from it. Recently salaries have dropped significantly, down to $500,000 per a year and jobs in CT surgery have become scarce. Some work can still be found in academic centres and valve problems are still at the top of their bread & butter cases but the day of the fast living, high earning heart surgeon is over. Some suspect that neurosurgery is going that way. If you considering choosing a medical career based on salary alone, be very careful about where you end up, 14 hours a day is going to seem like an eternity if you detest turning up for work at the hospital each morning, especially during the residency where you have no control over your life and the money you make is less than the janitor that cleans the operating theatre or the canteen lady who serves your tea each morning.

I personally think orthopeadics have it made - plenty of cases, interesting surgery, great lifestyle.

Hospital CEO's make the most. ($500k - $1.9M)

Some surgical subspecialists make a lot. Heart surgeons, orthopedic surgeons, neurosurgeons, etc. Remember, though, that they have to pay their office staff, rent, malpractice insurance, etc., and the hospital CEO doesn't.

I can say from experience that anesthesiologists are NOT the highest paid. I am one. We do ok, but we don't drive cars as fancy as the surgeons'. We just get to park next to them.

Any type of doctor, really. Having a private practice can earn you more money than working for say, a hospital. Surgeons & Ob-gyn make a lot of money as well. It also depends on how much you are willing to work.
