I bought a de-wormer from Walmart today. I think that I may have over dosed my cat. He threw up the de-wormer and he had the runs. What do I do now???

Do NOT buy OTC dewormers!!! They aren;'t effective and they can be dangerous to your cat..they can cause serious problems, even death.

Only get dewormers from a vet..take a stool sample in to the vet to be tested.that will tell you what if any type(s) of worms are present. Then the vet can give you the appropriate dewormer for the type(s) of worms your cat has and taht is appropriate in dose for your cat.

A lot of people do buy OTC medications for their pets and self diagose..this is one reason at the vet hospital we have a lot of pets brought in seriously ill or that die before they get there. OTC products often contain very powerful, condensed drugs that aren't safe.

Tell me the name of the medicine in the dewormer (is it piperazine?), the dose you were supposed to give (it's right there on the label), and the dose you actually gave.
It is always better to give too little than too much.

You're going to get a bunch of replies condemning you for treating your cat yourself. Frankly, many people use OTC (over-the-counter) medications for their animals and for themselves, with no ill effects. I've used piperazine for roundworms for years and have never had a problem, for example. I've also used OTC tapeworm meds without a problem. Of course, I do know the parasite's life cycles, how they are transmitted, and I read labels very carefully.

Anyway, if the cat vomited the dewormer, it probably didn't get too much. Sometimes dewormers can cause vomiting and diarrhea as a side effect, especially if the critter had a heavy worm load. When the worms begin to die, this may cause vomiting and diarrhea as well.

Keep a very close eye on your kitty. If he does not vomit again, and if his stools (poop) look normal within a day, he should be fine. If he continues to vomit and/or have diarrhea, if his gums look pale, if he acts lethargic (sleepy, laying around, not wanting to move), if he shakes or trembles, if he doesn't want to eat or drink, get him to the vet immediately.
I would also recommend that you visit the vet along with some poop in a baggie to find out what sort of worms your cat has and get the proper medication and dose for him. It is always possible for an animal to be sensitive to a medication, even if it is a common and generally safe one. If you tell the vet what happened, then he/she can give the cat the dewormer there in the clinic and observe him for a while to make sure he's going to be okay.

How was it diagnosed that your cat had worms?

A simple stool sample test at the veterinarian's office would confirm whether or not your cat had worms. They would also be able to give you the correct medication with the correct dosages so that the problem could be taken care of correctly.

If he has diarrhea for more than 24 hours, you'll need to take him to an emergency clinic. Dehydration from diarrhea that lasts that long can be life threatening.

Please don't self diagnose in the future. The money you believe you're saving will only cost you more down the road in emergency fees and doctor bills.

its probably not from the dewormer but you should know that wormers from Wal Mart are not effective against all kinds of worms.. if your cat has worms and you dont know what kind of worms you can take a stool sample to the vet - or better yet just have the vet give you a broad spectrum dewormer

I wager that's the worms interior him. this would not have befell if he become exterior. An experienced vet would not inform you to maintain the cat exterior. you will not have had all this grief in case you will possibly have merely shop the cat indoors. he's throwing up through fact there are various of worms interior him. i don't think of that's the medicine. except you like the two your cats to get worms and function your ill cat worsen, shop your cats interior!

Aren't you the clever one to practice veterinary medicine without training or a license!

Why retailers are allowed to sell and profit from the selling of these medications is beyond me. They are poisons and people don't know how to use them properly. Humans can't legally get such things to treat themselves or others. Our pets need the same protection.

Hopefully your cat will survive without any serious damage. Wormers are specific to the type of worm and there are quite a number of them. On what basis were you qualified to choose the right one or the right dosage?
