Point of fact: alcohol in and of itself does not taste good. Try drinking some white lightning sometime, or even some Bacardi 151. Pretty harsh stuff. The reason the cocktail was invented was to hide the taste of the booze, especially during prohibition when the "bath-tub" gins were prevalent. In other alcoholic beverages the concentration is relatively low and the taste is partially hidden or diluted by a myriad of flavorings, from hops or juniper berries, to burnt wood. When in low concentrations it can add a pleasant taste to some cocktails. Try adding some spiced rum to your eggnog. You won't believe the improvement in flavor. In the case of alcohol for flavoring, remember: less is more.

It's probably not be the "taste" that draws the followers. If it does not give you a little buzz, the fan club will shrink in leaps and bounces. Alcohol is more of a flavor enhancer than a flavor by itself. e.g. taste of alcohol free beer and wine is not anywhere as attractive as the real stuff.

well when i first started drinking i didn't like the taste but i liked the feeling of getting buzzed and then drunk. now years later i enjoy the taste of beer, but now i drink with moderation. So it takes time for people to start liking the taste of alcohol.

Certain people have the aquired taste for beer or alcohol. Me personally I like the taste of liquor because I like the smooth way it goes down. To each his own.
