You don't have to; but I shield the crust edges so it doesn't get overcooked.
Bake uncovered at 425 degrees for 15 minutes. Then shield the crust edge with a pie shield ring or fashion one with aluminum foil and place over edge. Reduce heat to 350 degrees and bake 40 minutes or until center is set.

Some folks do and some folks don't, and all will swear that theirs is the only "right" way to make a pumpkin pie. I've had it done both ways, and both work just fine. My mom never covered the crust, and we never had burnt bits. A friend always covered hers. I couldn't tell any difference when eating them, though. Both were delicious!
How about this: if your oven tends to run hot or overcook things, I'd cover the edges. If your oven cooks things more gently, don't bother.

You are meant to cook the base "blind" then add filling, then cover edges when baking the whole pie.

Pumpkin Pie is very dull and bland just like everything else in the American Thanksgiving meal.
What an awful event!!!

The crust edges? Yes, otherwise they might burn.
