Ok so I was just Maid-of-Honor last month. Here is what I can think of off hand:
Dress - $200
Alterations - $38
Hair - $30
Nails - $25
Shoes - $4 (got SUPER lucky)
Bridal Shower - $100 (got lucky her mom put it on I just got a gift)
Bachelorette Party - $200 (but we split hotel room and transportation)
Gift for wedding - $20 (Got a great sale!!!)
I know there was probably more but I can't think of it off of hand. But all these expenses don't usually come at once. We had it bad for our family though, my 2 year old son was the ringbearer and my fiance was the Bestman!!!

Good luck!!! HAVE FUN WITH IT!!!

Depending on the extravagance of the wedding.. I will be having a semi-formal small (less than 50 people) wedding and I know that my Maid of Honor had spent appx $120 on her dress ( i bought the accessories as gifts to her) $40 shoes, and about $30 on bachelorette invites. Most of the hard stuff is the time spent doing this for your Best Friend which is definitely priceless!

Well, you have the most responsibility as the MH...you'll have to pay for your shoes, dress, travel expenses, hotel costs, host the bachelorette party (if the bride wants one) and generally keep some stress off of the bride. Be thankful if the bride hired a wedding planner because that person will carry the most stress and she (or he) will be able to give you a pretty exact list of what you'll have to do based on the needs of the wedding.

What is expected of the Maid of honour?

Dress
Bridal Showers plus maybe host one
Stagette
Wedding Gift
Travel costs

Depending on the bride, I would guess $500.

It depends on a lot.......dresses you pick out, shoes, location, etc. My maid of honor paid about $400 for everything she did (dress, shoes, hair, shower, gift)...I was a bridesmaid in my friend's wedding a few months ago and it cost me around $600...but we had to stay in a hotel cuz it was 8 hours away, dress, shoes, hair, gifts, etc.

$200-Dress
$100- Alterations to dress
$75--Hair doo
$50 Shower gift ( The mother or mother-in-law usually pay for the shower now a days, neither of them offers, you are on the hook for a tiny shower, hopefully in someone's home)
$50-$500 Bachelorette party (Most are paid for by the people attending chipping in to cover themselves and the bride.)
$50-- bridal party gift to the couple
$200-- personal gift to the couple

And that doesn't include airfare if needed to get to the wedding, or hotel room.

But talk to the bride, she might not require you to get your hair done, or she might let you choose your own dress, that you will wear again.

It depends on if you have to purchase your dress and all the accessories or not. If the bride pays for it then just whatever gift you want to buy her. I'm from the old school where the bride purchases it, but then again I was married 13 years ago, it may be different now days what's proper and what isn't

the dress, the present, and some investments.

At the end it usually works out to costing about 200-500 depending on the price of the dress.
