My cat has a pretty good size abcess on its back from a cat fight. I am treating it with NFZ wound dressing (0.2% nitrofurazone) and trypzyme-V.
It has been open for a couple of days now and the cat seems to be acting normal. Still eating fine, running around and playing. I just still worry that I should be giving it an oral antibiotic. I'm out of work and don't have any spare $. So, I do have some amoxicillin that my 4 yr old never needed to take. It is 250mg/5ml suspension. How close is it to what a vet would prescribe?
If you work with animals or with a veterinarian, can you please answer.
All you cat lovers out there, don't worry, I have not given any to the cat. I am waiting for some sound advice first. Last resort will be to take it to the vet. So don't yell at me for not being a caring owner....I am. Why do you think I'm asking and hoping someone knowledgable will answer.
Thanks for your help!

the amoxicillin I have has never been used....it's a brand new bottle that I ended up not needing for my son. So it is not "left over".

The shelf life hasn't expired, the timing just worked out that I happen to have it on hand.

Do not give the Amoxi. Cats are commonly prescribed Amoxicillin but in different doses and concentrations. If the cat is fine, it shouldn't need an oral antibiotic, the topical should be fine. If you have any concerns about the wound or the cat gets worse... Lethargic, not eating... Definately call your vet and they will give you the proper dosage of meds.
Also animals can have reactions to nonprescribed meds... your best bet would be to continue with the topical, wounds take well over a week to heal, and abcesses will take longer... and if the cat gets worse THEN call the vet about the Amoxi.

Well I myself have never heard of amoxicillin being given to a cat before. But, the only thing I can say is that maybe it is working on the infection like it should, but the side effects could make your cat sleepy. I don't think this would hurt the cat if you got it from PetSmart. If you think about it the should not be able to give your cat something if it's not the right thing. I would trust there opinion. If you don't then call them and ask to speak to the main veterinarian in charge.

First I would start with disregard the extreme paranoia on giving your cat amoxcillin its not like asprin or any other pain killer or analgesic that will actually kill a feline due fact there liver cant process it. I am not a vet but for some reason even the vet student cant tell you that its simply 5-10 mg per pound of the cat. Human amocillin is same as fish mox and so on its same thing. It should be used for its purpose however to treat and prevent bacteria. Also for all you people that say "if you cant afford a vet dont have a pet" your not helping anyone and not everyone can remain finacialy stable for the 20 year life span of a cat. Things happen alot things especially in 20 years. so what would you have them do if they all of sudden lose there job, what option have the cat put to death at the humane society or let the cat go in the woods. Really all your doing is being judgmental of people that dont have the money you do. I mena why even answer the question with this its not an answer just a moral judgement. Also I noticed they post this on every pet question. so I hope this helps.

What is amoxicillin?
Amoxicillin is a penicillin antibiotic that fights bacteria.
Amoxicillin is used to treat many different types of infection caused by bacteria, such as tonsillitis, bronchitis, pneumonia, gonorrhea, and infections of the ear, nose, throat, skin, or urinary tract.
Amoxicillin is also sometimes used together with another antibiotic called clarithromycin (Biaxin) to treat stomach ulcers caused by Helicobacter pylori infection. This combination is sometimes used with a stomach acid reducer called lansoprazole (Prevacid).
There are many brands and forms of amoxicillin available and not all brands are listed on this leaflet.
Amoxicillin may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.

I have been in your shoes before. No money and a cat that has something wrong. The last time my cat needed an antibiotic the vet gave me baxil. Before that clavamox 62.5 mg twice a day. clavamox is a form of amoxicillin. I don't know if it would be OK. I am not a vet. My cats have had abscesses before if you put neosporin on it be sure you squeeze it all over inside the abscess. I know this is gross but it will get better from this. I have had lots of cats get better on there own.Good luck

Ok, before giving your cat the amoxicillin call two vets and explain your situation as to being out of work and wanting to care for your cat with amoxicillin. I think they won't commit before examining the cat.
Maybe they could advise you as to what to do in your case.
I think you should go with your last resort and "bite the bullet" get your cat in to the vet and put it on your Visa. You will feel so much better.
If you had given your cat the wrong dosage or wrong medication and she died then how would you feel?
Just get him in.

I use to work for a animal hospital and a lot of the medications are exactly the same ones humans take...there is no animal amoxicillian per say...its all the same thing..if I found 10 wild cats in my woods that were sneezing and coughing with matted eyes, would I take all ten to the vet??? could I even catch them??? or would I take amoxicillian and mix in into water and food and try my best to help??? before you go judging people that are asking for help on here you need to know that you could be in the same situation one day yourself...I don't think anyone would over does a cat or dog or they would not be asking for the help not too...fish mox is a very good thing to have on hand if you have strays or just having a hard time...its safe for cats and dogs and even people....
