I have two small dogs. They are very demanding and very stubborn. You have to have a lot of patience with these type of dogs. You can have them trained one day and get up the next and they are back to doing their own thing.

It does take longer to groom a dog with longer hair. You don't want them to get knots or mats in their hair. Making sure you buy the right brush for the right coat is important. You also have to buy good shampoo for long haired dogs.

They are yappy too. Small dogs tend to bark a lot. That can be good and bad. Good watch dogs.

They are very sweet though just make sure that you are prepared for the time they will demand. Accessories are fun to buy but they can be costly too.

Smaller breeds can be more suseptible to certain ailments. Right now both of mine are sick and the cost was around $800 for treatment.

They are great pets to spoil and love despite all of the demands. Of course, all dogs or any pets for that matter have their goods and bads. The love they give is priceless. Just make sure you want one for the right reason- to love and have them love you back.

I personally have a long haired chihuahua. I also have a short haired dog of another breed. They both take the same amount of grooming. Just because a dog has short hair doesn't mean they don't need brushing or bathing as often.
The key to shiny fur is their diet.
Long or short haired, all dogs shed.
Chihuahua's are a very loyal and protective breed. It's true they can be a little hard to potty train (mine hates the cold and rain and sometimes refuses to go out)
I also don't have a big problem with barking. Just when someone comes to the door.
It never hurts to do research about the breed you are planning to buy.
Also, you can get doggy accessories for just about any kind of dog.

I've got a long coat Chihuahua and she is beautiful, but please don't put yours in a bag if you get one, little jumpers i Can cope with as they do get cold but they love to be out and about and need excercise just like any other dog, the name "toy bred" doesn't mean it is literally a toy.

They are incredibly cute but they are not fashion accessories. They need allot of time, walks, and attention. If you give them this they are lovely. Treating them like toys is what gets them a bad name for being yappy . . it's actually boredom!

If you get a Chihuahua treat it s what it is . . a dog. It will be the most loyal (and cutest!) friend you will ever have!

Ok i agree with the other people small dog's are difficult i have a min pin as she is very head strong and mouthy, and i don't mean she barks alot (which she does) but she tells me off and hates it if she isn't by my side at all times she is very funny and an absolute doll as im sure your dog will be.
I would go for the short haired chi just cause i have a cocker too and OMG alot of work with the coat on her ,she has to be brushed all the time(which she hates) it is work.
I brush there hair and teeth all the time, regular baths it is like a child.
The short hair chi would be easy just a wipe down with a wet cloth to keep her coat fresh and clean.
You can also litter train them if you want cause small dogs are hard and i mean hard to go potty outside, im struggling with that now with mine.

Oh someone above forgot to ad Brittney Spears to more celeb chi owners

Well good luck if i could handle another dog i would get a chi they are so adorable, and i know what you mean about the bags for them what a nice perk to being a small dog owner...........don't tell anyone but i think med and large dog owners are just jelous cause there dog wouldn't look as cute in a bag.........lol

Don't listen to the other people who are putting you down saying your getting a dog as an accessory, i doubt you are and what ever your reasoning it's your business and no one else's.

Good luck

It's all just a matter of personal preference. We have short hair and guys like it. And i prefer a man with short hair over a man with long hair because long tresses tends to make guys look as well girly.

Chihuahuas are very cute, my cousin has a long haired 1 but its not always easy taking care of him and he sheds like crazy. You see balls of hair blowing around the house at times and recently we went walking with him and he got bubble gum stuck in his hair. Just think about how much money it cost when they get sick as well.

Chihuahuas are the best!! I love the look of the long haired ones and they shed less. Like you said, they do require more grooming. You will love a chihuahua, long or short.

i have 5 chihuahua, i can tell you that long haired chis need the same amount of brushing as a smooth coat. smooth coat lossess just the same amount of hair, because it is shorter it like little needles and sticks all in your clothes where long hair chis brush of easier. dogs are really not a fashion accessoriey they dont like bags to be carried in they are scared of them, some of the clothes restrict they little legs, most breeders (who are not breedering for the money) will not sell there chis, if they think you only want a accessorey.

Go for a lab or a retreiver. The labs are very obidient they will fetch etc within a month of having them. Also very sturdy but will need alot of exercise, this can be a good thing as you would get exercise too. Any gun dogs are great! As for toy pets I would give them a miss, there not even that cute and will annoy you yap yap yap all the time! Get a real dog

The short haired chihuahua is real cute. We have a fawn, light toned brown, the same color from its paws, body and face along with its nose, all one tone. So cute, very protective, Do not think you can leave them in any ones care, out of your vision, the pup is like a bad kid without you around. Not as worse as they act when you, are around. Overly territorial is putting it kindly. , hard to explain, makes you feel loved. It really only loves a couple or very few humans. Long haired are not as cute to me, it is said, you love your own, little monkey...
