I have only my employer ID and it's not state or Federal. I have a valid Birth Certificate. But all of my other important ID has expired: Passport and Drivers License. I have to be in LA in the evening at the Kodak Theatre on Thursday, November 16th, but i'm told i will not be allowed on the plane without valid ID. Please advise me as i regret paying a lot of money for an important televised event in LA that is taping for TV on Nov. 16th to be viewed on Dec. 5th,thanks !!

You have everything you will need. When you have an expired ID, all you be asked to provide 2 forms of government issued, non-photo ID. You can use them in any combination. An original birth certificate with raised seal as well as an expired Passport will be sufficient to accomidate the expired driver's liscense.

It's an airline policy however, unfortunately, there is nothing federally on the books because of "privacy issues". If you show up with no ID you will be hassled and can be turned away, but again...there is nothing federally that says you have to prove who you are, which is sad and should be ammended. You will however be a selectee and have to undergo full searches each way, so make sure you arrive early and allow ample time to get through security. Check the current carry on items list on the TSA's website and pack accordingly. Make sure you follow the "all liquids must be travel size 3oz or less and in a quart size zip-loc bag"

There are "constitutionalists" who scream that we shouldn't have to prove who we are to vote, or for any other reason other than to say "yes, thats me", the FAA has said that "you can not force an American citizen to show proof of identity" in order to fly. Its a huge hassle and you will be hassled if you can not provide ID. However in a letter from the FAA dated back in 1996, "While an airline is required to request identification, the actual presentation of identification by the passenger is not absolutely required, and there is currently no prohibition against allowing someone on an aircraft without such identification.....Where airlines implement additional or more stringent measures, passengers my sometimes experience differences in procedures as they
undergo processing. Refusal to allow a passenger without a photo identification to board the aircraft is an example of such differences, and is the policy of an individual airline; this is not an FAA security requirement."

There are a lot of jerks who will challenge this and purposely buck the system and demand justice. Just take what you have, show it and you'll be fine, no questions asked.

Some airlines will mark your luggage and boarding pass and once you are cleared onboard, your luggage will then be loaded.

As of today, there has been no such ammendments to the directive below.

Security Directive 96-05 issued by the FAA as of 1996:
1. IDENTIFY THE PASSENGER -

A. ALL PASSENGERS WHO APPEAR TO BE 18 YEARS OF AGE WILL PRESENT A GOVERNMENT ISSUED PICTURE ID, OR TWO OTHER FORMS OF ID, AT LEAST ONE OF WHICH MUST BE ISSUED BY A GOVERNMENT AUTHORITY.

B. THE AGENT MUST RECONCILE THE NAME ON THE ID AND THE NAME ON THE TICKET -- EXCEPT AS NOTED BELOW.

C. IF THE PASSENGER CANNOT PRODUCE IDENTIFICATION, OR IT CANNOT BE RECONCILED TO MATCH THE TICKET, THE PASSENGER BECOMES A "SELECTEE." CLEAR ALL OF THEIR LUGGAGE AS NOTED IN SECTION 6, BELOW.

6. CLEAR SELECTEE'S CHECKED AND CARRY-ON LUGGAGE, AND SUSPICIOUS ARTICLES DISCOVERED BY THE QUESTIONS ASKED;

A. IF THE SELECTEE IS ON A FLIGHT WITHIN THE 48 CONTINENTAL US STATES, OR TO MEXICO, OR TO CANADA, ITEMS CAN BE CLEARED BY EITHER OF THE FOLLOWING METHODS:

1. EMPTY THE LUGGAGE OR ITEM AND PHYSICALLY SEARCH ITS CONTENTS BY A QUALIFIED SCREENER, OR;

2. BAG-MATCH -- ENSURE THE BAG IS NOT TRANSPORTED ON THE AIRCRAFT IF THE PASSENGER DOES NOT BOARD.

B. IF THE SELECTEE IS ON AN INTERNATIONAL FLIGHT -- CHECKED LUGGAGE, CARRY-ON LUGGAGE, AND SUSPECT ITEMS CAN BE CLEARED ONLY BY THE FOLLOWING METHOD; EMPTY THE LUGGAGE OR ITEM AND PHYSICALLY SEARCH ITS CONTENTS BY QUALIFIED SCREENERS.

(However be advised International travel may differ, if you do not have a passport the arriving country can deport you, check their regulations if this is ever an issue)

Call the airline. I don't think it matters if your driver license is expired, it is still a picture ID just not one that allows you to legally drive anymore. Same with your passport, it is still a picture ID just could not go out of country with it anymore. So the expired pic ID + birth certificate may be just fine. Or, as the others stated, it only takes a day to get an updated license (or if you can't get a driver's license for some reason you can get just a state issued Identification Card at the DMV which is the same thing only you can't drive with it).

You shouldn't be so irresponsible next time.

Show up without your IDs. It will be a fight, but you ARE allowed to fly without any ID whatsoever.

ID checking is for revenue protection, and is NOT a federal requirement.
