Sooo Im a part-time waitress in New York and yeah I know people pay more in rent here and the foods a little more expensive, but does that mean the person who is serving you should have to do everything to make sure you are comfortabe on your time out and make less than a 10% tip for it..So I figure it cant be that some people just wanna be mean and not tip us, but just don't know how. Im just curious what kind of tips you guys leave to your waiter or waitress who you felt did a good job??

To Pastor Guy- Well what most people actually do when they dont know is double the tax and thats the tip, but then I guess it depends on what state you live in, here in NY if you double the tax it comes out to about 15% gratuity

15% not including tax for good service. 10% not including tax for adequate service. 0% for rude or unacceptable service. 20% if the service is more memorable than the food.

For service that is acceptable but not good (slow, not friendly) I tip around 15% or a little more. (lunch, supper or anything else) If the service was great then I don't use a set percent.(it would be around 30+%) I try to be generous when I can. On the other hand I have experienced such bad waiters/waitresses that I felt compelled not to leave a tip. I made sure to tell them why!

I leave 20% including tax unless the service was really wonderful. Then I don't so much figure out a percentage as I just add as much as I can to the 20% I'm already leaving. I used to be a waitress and it was always so nice to have someone leave me ann exceptional tip. I like to do that for others.

Perhaps since your waitressing in NY it may be out of town tourists that are giving you low tips.
I would like to think that most NY er's would know to tip at least 20% for good service. Myself I generally give 20%-30% for good service. If I have had bad service I leave about 10-15%.

It shouldn't be about the per-cent.
It should be about service.
If you have a lazy slow
don't-give-a-darn waitress,
then let her know she can't
make any money in this profession unless she straightens up! Those are usually the ones who bellyache the most when they don't get a tip they THINK they deserve.

I leave very large tips to decent waitresses or waiters. I used to be a waitress, and my daughter is now. I know how important it is to add up that tip money and make it count

Tipping is not a city in China, leave 20% as a rule and if the service is really bad, leave 15% , tell them why you left such a rotten tip and request them the next time you go there. You won't believe the service after that.

I usually do 10% on a lunch tab, 15 on a dinner. I have heard that the tip shouldn't include the tax total. Any thoughts on that?

Business traveler here. For wait staff 15-20% depending on quality of service. 25% if the service was exceptional.

for barristas, deli workers, people who have to do something special to fix your order--10% if there is a tip jar

for delivery drivers and bus staff at buffet places--10%

Drive thru cashiers--NO TIP, yes I have seen tip jars at places where they don't do anything except ring up your order

I go with the "double your tax" rule of thumb, unless the waiter/waitress was wonderful in which case I always add on to that.
