peace: I am from America, and I can honestly say I have no idea what you are talking about.
My schools never put any emphasis on patriotism whatsoever. It's not really the case for all states, I think it's regional.
The north east may not have much expressed nationalism or patriotism as the southern schools try to push.

Robespierre: We feel national pride for the same reason any other country does.
You have no idea how ignorant you sound, especially your "all Americans are stupid" trip.
You are a joke.

because being proud of your country doesn't meke it great.
We are very proud of our achievements, you only have to see Trafalgar square after the ashes etc.. to see the national pride.

Perhaps because the Americans of today practically wiped out their native inhabitants more recently than the Brits did.
It sounds stupid, but the more something did not originally belong to you, the more you have to be patriotic and prove that you love it and therefore it is yours.
Also the American government is much more organised in telling people what they need to hear, and keeping propaganda at a maximum, the British Press in the UK is far too free in comparison to the limited number of newspapers in the US.

I think back to when I was young and how much I looked forward to celebrating July 4th . . . seeing the big fireworks display live in my area; the feeling I received when holding my hand over my heart when saying the Pledge of Allegiance and singing the Star Spangled Banner; and, the growing pride when learning about the great Americans that made the USA what it is for our day.
All theses things were as natural to me as breathing. They still are.I still feel tremendous pride in my Nation. But I also fear for the nation, its fast becoming the dumping ground for every third world country in the world. We are being invaded by an endless stream of illegal aliens sneaking across our borders. They only come to this nation to feed from its bounty, they don't respect our nation or its flag. They take and then spit in our faces and demand that we speak their language and do things the way they did in the country they left behind.
I know that the UK is having immigration problems too and you have my heart felt sympathy we know what you are going thru and we are with you on this one in our support. Our two great nations have but one fault....and that is being too generous to the world.Perhaps its time to close our doors.

I am proud to be a human. I hate patriotism. Our world never had any good out of patriotism but wars and hate. Patriotism was being used by leaders to send innocent people out to death and to kill others in the name of fake values. It is sick ideology and it should be banned. It is sad to admit but todays USA remind me nazi Germany. Of course not all Americans are nationalists but many of them can be called that name. I think you people are being indoctrinated by media. Every american movie has patriotic message where they tell you that you are the best nation on this planet and you should rule the world. It is good you have noticed that it is especially you - the american people who is so patriotic and you ask why you are and the Brits are not. It rings the bell. The answer is in media. Propaganda just like in nazi Germany. You are hypnotized and you cant see this fact just like Germans were unable to see so many of you go to war without asking any questions.

When the UK government has made freedom of speech a criminal offence on the grounds of incitment of this that and the other and when local councils ban the flying of the British flag on the grounds that it may offend certain section of the community its difficult to feel pride.

mainly because the USA unlike the UK is very young in terms of history, it hasn't had time for the patriotism of it's youth to be jaded by the cynicism arising from various wars over the centuries. when the age of american history equals the UK no doubt you'll find the same scepticism there as here.

because the GREAT has been taken away from GREAT BRITAIN by the government and all the do-gooders, by giving away our rights and our heritage and every thing we have ever fought or worked hard for, to every asylum seeker, immigrant, low life or scrounger who decides to come here and bleed us dry.
our government has let us all down and puts all the " ethnics" feelings and demands before their own peoples.
SO WHAT IS THERE LEFT TO BE PROUD OF.
NOTHING.

The humor part of me says it's cause the weather is crap over there... the other part says it's because of the way our country is set. On Independence day, loyalty and patriotism was probably a big thing, and since we celebrate it today, I guess loyalty to our country is still running on. We're proud because we fought and we won our independence.

We are proud!
We just show it in a different way.We know we have problems, but which countries don't? We have thousands and thousands of years of rich and varied history., we have beautiful architecture and one of the most respected legal systems in the world. We invented and discovered huge amounts of things and are the cutting edge of science and technology - we even designed the ipod!
The UK is, unlike the USA, actually a group of countries unified through treaties and statutes under the Monarchy and Westminster Government. People are extremely proud of their individual nations, whether it be England, Sctoland, Northern Ireland or Wales. They are so proud it can often cause friction, but proud none the less and when it comes down to it we proud nonetheless.
In response to those who have previously answered, you might not like the UK, but I love it. When you see bad reports of scandal in the papers, it isn't because we hate ourselves but we want to make it better. Why do most of us Brits oppose the EU? Because we feel it takes or uniqueness, our Britishness our soul away from us. I know we aren't perfect, but I'd rather live here than anywhere else in the world.
Americans may feel the need to publicise their patriotism more than we do over in the UK, but shouting "USA! USA!" over and over only means you are more proud vocally, because in our hearts us Brits are intensely proud - and in my humble opion, with good reason.

Americans are taught in school a very patriotic attitude, including we are the best, better than other countries, etc.
I love America, but we have our faults just like any country and other countries have did equally great things.
I think a lot of other countries are more realistic picture of themselves, and not a romanticized idea of where they live.
