If you dog is up there in age it could be arthritis. This happened last week to my dog. Also, look at the dog's nails to make sure they aren't too long or short and hurting.

Does your dog do some serious running or jumping? My dog had this same problem with her front leg.I have dobermans and they run off the deck all the time, fast. She limped for quite awhile and I finally decided to take her to the vet. They x-rayed her leg and said I should probably take her to a specialist.I asked the vet if she thought the dog may have a sprang? She wasn't sure so I took the dog to the specialist. He wasn't even sure and I asked him the same thing about the sprang. He said it was possible so I asked for a pain pill that I had used for a dog with cancer. The medication is a combo of inflammatory and pain medication. I put the dog on the medication, but she still limped for 6-8 weeks.I know it usually takes a long time for a human to heal from a muscle or ligament injury so a dog must be the same. The name of the medication is Deramax if your vet carries it. I hope your dog is feeling much better real soon.

Check it for lacerations firstly. It is not uncommon for dogs to cut themselves between the toes, on the webbing, and that is often missed because you have to spread the toes to see it. If she has a cut, she may or may not have to go to the vet to get it stitched up, and the sooner the better so it is exposed to fewer infection causing agents.
If it is not cut, that means that it's either a fracture, sprain or something with the ligaments/tendons. You can go to the vet to be on the safe side, but it would be OK to wait until morning to see if it gets better or worse.
If she is not limping in the morning, she probably just pulled it and does not need to see a vet.
If she is limping in the morning, especially if it is worse, the vet will be able to tell you the cause of her pain, and either cast it or just give you doggie pain killers for her. Good luck.

I would first check the pads and in between the toes for anything that may be caught in their, a cut on the foot, do her toenails look broken or torn? If you do not see anything I would recommend that you take her to the vet to have her diagnosed and treated. Good Luck.
