It's the cut of the meat that makes it a ham. It's still pork.

Technically, ham is the thigh and buttock of any animal that is slaughtered for meat, but the term is usually restricted to a cut of pork, the haunch of a pig or boar. Although it can be cooked and served fresh, most ham is cured in some fashion. Pork is any part of the meat of a pig.

Ham is generally a cured pigs leg (it's been soaked in brine, or a sugar solution, or both, and sometimes it's been smoked, too.), and pork is just raw meat from a pig.

Pork almost always needs cooking. Ham doesn't always need cooking.

Hope that helps!
