Before you use kilz I would wipe the trim with a "deglosser"or lightly sand it. It will give you better adhesion.for the kilz.

Kilz is a little over the top and hard to work with. Any oil based primer should be fine, just do a good prep job.

yes it is but, 1st u must scuff the area with sandpaper before using the oilbased kilz. the water based kilz doesn't adhere as well,especially over varnish.

Yes. I've done the same,remove flaking paint first.
