Try 'Bob the Builder' items. They have lots of interactive "tool sets", games, and even a tool bench. I don't know if they still have them, but when i was younger, Playskool made mini kitchens, restaurants, hair salons, etc. that was kid size and had alot of the accessories included. You could look into that too. Good Luck!!
Edit: Playskool now makes a mower, barbeque pit, vacuum and the like.

they have out a new vsmile for babys age 6-36 months that is what i am getting my son he will also be 18 months on dec 11 this game plugs into tv and helps them learn shapes colors numbers everything or maybe get him a tricycle or a powerwheels vehicle, whatever you think he will enjoy the most good luck and God Bless oh and at toysrus they have a ride on thomas the train that my son has been sieing on tv and he loves it kind of expensive $199

I love giving infant/child drums and sticks sets. You can find some that are sturdy and colorful and aren't terribly noisy. The kids absolutely love them and I get a huge laugh out of the parent's reaction. As long as your child is old enough to sit alone, he or she is old enough to set and hit the drum.
There are also very colorful workmen benches that allow the child to engage in educational activities.

I saw the add for the Elmo talking work bench. My son starting running towards the TV shouting "Elmo" when he saw it so that is going to be his big present this year.

If you go to the toys r us web site they have the "big book" of toys and they have a lot of stuff, most has free shipping, check it out because only you know what your child would like not us.

doesnt' really matter at that age they love the box it came in....my daughter got a huge elmo that is 4ft tall last year they had it at toys r us.
