My son 20 months old as well, and I had the same worries! We play our own little version of hide and seek, since he doesn't quite understand it all yet. That gets him running around and having fun. This is a good opportunity to get him into reading books and coloring, and stuff like that. Why don't you visit your local craft shop and see if you can find a toddler friendly craft to do together. Whatever you do, don't let him park himself in front of the tv all day.

If you're into taking him somewhere and he understands no, I always used to take my little girl to Chuck E. Cheese after breakfast (they open at 9AM, and no school kids are there)and leave before lunch, then we'd go home, or to an indoor picnic pavillion at the park for a picnic. They can climb, run, and play there for no money if you tell them ahead of time, or they have a few toddler rides, and that wouldn't even cost you $5. I also would take her to Toys R Us, and just let her play with things there, most have like a train table set out, or things like that. Also, our local libraries have toddler story time for about an hour or so a week. Also, some movie theaters have specials for young kids on a certain day of the week. We also can get like a guest pass for the YMCA for a week or so and take them swimming, and to play in the gym (best when the big kids are at school). Also, a lot of fire stations and things will let you take a tour, and my daughter loves that b/c her uncle is a firefighter. These are some ideas for outside your house, hope it helps!

Get him some rain boots and a rain coat and let him splash in the puddles. My son is 2 and he loves to do this. We go out in the rain and kick the soccer ball around. We live in Washington state so if we didn't go out when it was raining we would never get out of the house. For indoors, if you have room, bring in some folding chairs and set them on their side and get some blankets and make a fort.
