It depends:
The fastest turboprop powered aircraft is the Tupolev TU-95 "Bear", with a top speed of 575 mph.
The fastest jet powered aircraft is the Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird, with a top speed of Mach 3.3.
The fastest rocket powered plane is the North American X-15, with a top speed of Mach 6.72.
The fastest combat jet is the Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-25 "Foxbat", with a top speed of Mach 3.2.
The fastest unmanned airplane is the X-43 Scramjet, with a top speed of Mach 9+. (I think)

The fastest manned airCRAFT is X-15 with his max speed of Mach 6,85. But X-15 was experimental and was powered by 4 rocket engines. It was between an airplane and a spacecraft.
The fastest airPLANE is Sr-71, that performed Mach 3,3.
Sr-71 was powered by jet engines that acted like ramjets at high speeds, not by conventional jet engines.
The fastest Airplane now in service is MiG-31. MiG-31 can exceed Mach 3 for short periods, but not in routine use(after Mach 3 flight engines must be revisioned). Max speed is usually limited at Mach 2,83.
The fastest civil airplane(liner) was Concorde that performed a maximum speed of Mach 2,04.
The fastest seaplane is Convair Sea Dart(1,120 Km/h), while the fastest piston engine seaplane is still Macchi MC.72(709.202 Km/h).

The SR-71 is the fastest (hands down) and it can cruise at Mach 2. 4 which is about 1360 mph at 70,000 feet above sea level. the plane was designed in the late 1950's and acording to a fellow pilot friend it was designed by aliens (not to be confused with illegal aliens from Mexico).

Probably the SR-71 Blackbird. I think the top speed is still classified.

'some guy' is correct. The X43 Scramjet is capable of about Mach 9, however, that would be about 6,500 miles per hour!! The X-15 STILL has the highest manned flight records, over 40 years later!!

You would need to qualify your question a little better. Type of engine. Manned or Unmanned. Passenger or Military. Current use or Experimental. Etc... technically, all of the other answers are correct without more specifics of what you want.

IT IS NOT THE SR-71... Maybe if we were still in the 70's and 80's.

But today it is the SCRAMJET that is the fastest.

SR-71 Blackbird for now...Unless the Air Force/NASA unveil their new prototype.
