YES. For a while there was a rumor that the Army was taking people that didn't have either, but it was just a rumor. You can go into the Delayed Enlistment/Entry Program while still in High School, but you have to have a High School Diploma or GED to enlist.

I am going to quote directly from an army info web site (on the official Go Army website it states diploma or equivilency is required, but as with most things in the Army this can be waived - see below) and link it below in case you have other questions:

Enlisting with a GED

The Army is not accepting people with a GED in most areas of the country, however, the Army reserves the right to waive certain disqualifications and allow enlistment if deemed in the best interest of the individual and the service. If you will only need a waiver for the GED, it is highly likely that you will be accepted. Please note that when the Army did accept a GED, they were required to score at least 50 on the ASVAB.

There are some drawbacks to enlisting with a GED, such as not being eligible for bonuses. If you have 15 college credit hours under your belt, you will be eligible for [additional] bonuses. Also, upon reaching 30 college semester hours, no waiver is needed for the GED.

The recruiter will assist you in getting your GED. Take advantage of every educational experience that you can get.

The more education that you get, the better your armed forces experience will be. You just might not just peel potatoes, but get into some technical stuff. With more education, you can learn even more. Otherwise, it would be like a house without a foundation.

You can't be a total idiot if you found Answers at Yahoo. You have potential... so GO FOR IT.

A high school diploma is preferred most by the recruiters. I'm not sure if they still take people with GED's (with recruits at a low, they might have eased the rules a little).

Yes, you do have to have a HS diploma, as far as I know they are not accepting a GED, you would need to call the recruiters in your area to find out for sure.

A GED was sufficient in the 80's however with military lowering entrance standards, you might not even need that

The requirement is a GED or a hs diploma. But if you have neither they will help you attain it.

Not any more. Recruiting was down so much that they started taking those without a high school education.
