Now my oldest (5) has a swollen upper lip. I can't see any sores. I know he dose get cold sores, could it be one under his lip causing it to swell or could it be something else? My husband has the van until this evening, so I can't take them into town to see a doctor until he gets home.

You know the old drill, lots of fluids, vitamin c, chicken soup. Have you given the five year old any medication that he could be having an allergic reaction to? Are there any other symptoms...rash, fever or "labored breathing"? Labored breathing and/or rash and fever could be anaphylactic shock from allergy to medication. Keep your eye on him for more swelling, rash and fever and the labored breathing. Check him in the warm spots on his body (arm pits, belly, fanny) for rash. I hate to be an alarmist but the swelling lip gives me pause to think it's more than the sniffles. Just keep your eye on him and get a flashlight and look under his lip and down his throat for a cold sore or red tonsils. I'll pray for his health and your peace of mind.
Pharfly, e mail me and let me know how it turns out. I just don't want to over-alarm you and will be interested to know how he's doing...valducci

Well, until you can see a doctor, my advice would just be what you are probably already doing: Lay them down in bed or on the couch, make some chicken noodlesoup, and give them a book or let them watch TV to occupy their time until you can talk to a doctor.

Boy that sounds miserable!

If he can handle it, try giving your eldest something hot to drink. The steam will help him feel better at least. And try a little steam. At least, that won't hurt anything.

Good luck!
