When shoopping for age 3-5:

Avoid toys that are constructed with thin, brittle plastic that might easily break into small pieces or leave jagged edges.

Look for household art materials, including crayons and paint sets, marked with the designation "ASTM D-4236." This means the product has been reviewed by a toxicologist and, if necessary, labeled with cautionary information.

Teach older children to keep their toys away from their younger brothers and sisters.

I think a subscription to Hightlights Magazine would be great - fun and education and works for 3 and older. Info about subscription listed on resource along with other age appropriate gifts.

I have this prob this year myself with my sons.

I got him a trike with a trailer, a pair of fisher price roller skates (adjustable) with all the safety gear, some thomas trains, a couple of young kids board games...

Books are always a fav here, and so are outside toys. Anything outside is good.

Especially because he has got an older brother, he tends to do more stuff so I always go for stuff I think he is going to grow into.

what does he like? imagination toys offer the best fun, don't need battery replacement, lightbulbs, rechargers. my son just loved dinosaurs when he was 3, and buzz lightyear stuff, or any astronaut stuff. does he like trucks/cars, some kids play with those forever. just pick stuff he won't choke on, as lots of 3 year olds still put stuff in their mouths and chew on stuff. my son had great fun with fischer-price castle/knights set, still plays with it, he is 10. it still is in perfect shape. happy shopping.

YOU DIDN'T SAY HOW MUCH OLDER THE BROTHER IS. MY GRANDSON IS 4YEARS OLD. I FOUND THE V-TECH SMILES FOR HIM. THE CARTRIDGES ARE ONLY $20.00 EACH AND THEY HAVE A WIDE RANGE OF AGES. OR MAYBE YOU COULD FIND A GAME IF THEY ARE SOMEWHAT CLOSE IN AGE. WHEN ALL ELSE FAILS, SWEATS WORK WONDERS.
