that is an ancient question like Which came first, Chicken or Egg. Nobody knows that answer for sure.
I believe it does not make noise, as noise is something that is created inside the head which has ears that interpret the vibrations as sound. No ears, no sound.
Clarkie's theory on Tree Noise.

it's not a joke.

If a tree falls in the forest and there is nobody around
does it make a sound?

YES!--- but it's not quite what you might think.

Scientists have been dealing with the problem of natural tree falls (and the sound they make--or don't make) for quite some time and have drawn some rather surprising conclusions.

If a tree falls and there is a person around the sound is easily recognized.

If a tree falls in the forest and there is nobody nearby, the sound that it makes is very different and often not recognized as the sound of a tree falling.

Either way, there is a sound.

Even though plants do not show any changes to the naked (or lensed) eye, when a human is in their presence systemic biological changes have been discovered that have grave effects on plant life when a person is within 300 meters. This effect is called "human stress syndrome".

Apparently, when a tree is about to fall, if it senses a human nearby the biological stresses of human presence cause the cell walls in the plant to become brittle and it is the cell brittleness responsible for the familiar sound we know as that of a tree fall. The cell brittleness also has significant effects to the quality of the lumber, making it much more suitable for use in construction (see below).

Through the miracle of recording tape, we are able to provide a sound recording of an actual tree falling without human presence

noise is a human / animal perception.
Air vibration that causes the human perception noise by making the eardrum vibrate would be produced, but actual noise cannot be experienced without a live being present.

i.e. if you shut your eyes there is still light your just not percieving it.

That's one of those questions that you can't really answer. How do you know. It's like the chicken and the egg question. I'm not sure but I'm guessing s.s. is social studies class, it's a trick question.

omg i love this question, its a brill arguement starter.

well if the tree fell no one would hear it. so some people believe that sound is only generated when we create waves into sound in our ears...

but on the other hand... some people believe the waves are the sound.

its depends on your opinion on the science behind it...

a tree Would make a sound in the forest, because a human being in the vincinity of the tree would not change the amount of sound waves coming from a tree.

no, because someone must be there to hear it. The noise vibration has to hit someone's eardrum...(human or animal)

That`s what I think anyways... Good luck

in reality, yes. but if there is no one in the forest then it wouldn't make noise because there would be no proof...since no one is there.
