I'm a bartender and I get a lot of "newbies" in my bar! Don't worry about sounding "experienced"...we don't really notice one way or the other. Just know that if you order a drink like a vodka cranberry (cape cod), you usually get the "well" liquor...the cheapest. My advice...if you're mixing liquor with juice or coke, just stick with the well...it's cheaper and, as some people put it, you are "ruining" the booze with the juice or soda. If you're doing martinis or shots, go with a decent brand (premium, super-premium, or top-shelf are bartending terms for that). Just try different things and see what you like!!!
What NOT to do: "what kind of shots do you have"....duh! "What do you recommend?"...I hate when people say that! Pick something. If you do want to try something new, give the bartender something to go with! For example..."what would you suggest with pineapple juice". Give the bartender at least one or two ingredients and they should be glad to help you out!
Happy birthday and have fun...be safe!

top shelf are the more expensive liquors. There are no specials ways to order a drink really. But, if u want a good drink then try a slow screw (sloe gin and orange juice) or you can go all the way with a long island iced tea. or a slippery nipple or fuzzy navel, or you could ask for a martini straight up no salt or with salt. or a daiquiri. "I could keep this list going all night. I used to bartend at a Club. But, those are drinks that will get you some attention like you know what your talking about. on the rocks means with ice. Another good drink is a Yeager bomb. Now, the bar is not supposed to mix this for you so, if they give you two different glasses drop one inside the other and then take it like a shot. They are not supposed to mix it because it is a upper and a downer. Good luck and have fun. And by the way, they will card you so they will know its your first time at a bar. That's OK too cuz if you let the bartender know its your b-day they will get you trashed if u want. Have fun

Top Shelf refers to premium Liquors, say Bombay Sapphire Gin to Gibleys. Well refers to what the bar stocks for multi-purpose drinks. A rum and coke will usually give you a cheap rum, but depending on the bar/restaurant it may be something a bit better and more pricey. Straight up means no ice, rocks, means ice, splash, is just a squirt of non-alcohol or alcohol added liqueur. Blended means in a blender. (like Pina Colada's) Margaritas can be blended or on the rocks. One mistake folks make is they ask for a premium liquor in multi-liquid drinks. Why ask for Grey Goose in a Bloody Mary? You pay more, and don't get the satisfaction of actually tasting a class Vodka? Experiment and see what liquor you prefer. (not to excess mind you) The bartender can recommend some great drinks based on what you like, but if you want to be daring, let him/her decide. Don't mix too many different liquors or you'll regret it! Remember the rule, 1 per hour and don't drive! And should you have a hangover the next day, Vitamin B12 and as much water as you can handle!

keep it simple with items like beer, vodka tonic or captain morgan and coke etc. the best thing is to go to a bar slow bar order a beer and strike up a conversation with the bartender. a majority of them will gladly explain everything to you. top shelf drinks are the higher quality spirits the bar has. the drinks are definitely better, but more expensive ( a glass of cognac can be around $150). order top shelf drinks when you can appreciate what you are drinking.
happy birthday

top shelf means...premium liquor, more expensive, not out of the basic well with cheap liquors. be careful with these! a basic margarita will run you around $4.50...but a top shelf..or a "cadillac" can run you between $11.00 - $20.00 per drink!!
Up = without ice, usually served chilled in a martini glass
Neat = without ice, served in a variety of glasses, sometimes chilled.
Dirty = with olive juice
Twist = usually a lemon or lime wedge or rind
Training Wheels = usually paired with a shot of tequila...lime and salt
Whisper = term for martinis and manhattans and refers to vermouth...
Dry = no vermouth
the list goes on and on....
Ask your bartender! tell them what flavors you like! berries, creamy, chocolate, sweet. a good bartender will be able to accomodate you with a good selection of what to try.
Drink lots of water!
Designate a Driver!
Tip your Bartender!
And have a great birthday!!!!

It's simply ratios. The quantity is determined by how a lot you're making. If it is a giant batch, one million side might imply one million cup, one million gallon, anything. Then the opposite component might be three/four cup, three/four gallon and many others.
