From what I recall, 6 is an imperfect number while 7 is a perfect number. 666 is the following:
6 = Dragon (Satan)
6 = The Beast (Antichrist)
6 = The False Prophet

Simple.
In the Book of Revelation, the beast and the false prophet come to power when the 6th seal is opened, when the 6th vial is poured out, and when the 6th trump sounds.
6-6-6!
No one has ever been able to successfully prove any other theory about this, so only time will tell, but the at least the above is a sure thing, and is also easily proven from scripture.

It is the numerical symbol of unholiness. Since the symbol of GOD is 7 meaning fullness, completion and perfection, the 6 is the ultimate symbol of imperfection and incompletion. The Hebrews often repeated words and phrases to stress importance (this type of writing is very evident in the book of Psalms) the fact that there are three 6's only serves to reidify the unholiness of it's meaning.
