My dog has allergies; she was red and scratched a lot. The vet gave her an antihistamine and I paid about $20 for 14 tablets. I found out that the medication was Chlortrimaton and it was the same medication that humans take. At another vet I went to, one of the office girls whispered to me that a solution I bought the last time was hydrogen peroxide! I paid a lot for it.
When it was time for a refill for the allergy meds I bought them at Walmart (the same 4 mgs) for $2.77 for 100 pills. How often is this the case?

My dog does the same thing. the vet had him on benedryl and it made him sleep too much..He's now on Claritin and it's working so much better.(both generics and cheap). Any medicine you get from the vet is going to be a lot higher than if you bought it at the store. I have found a great website that I can ANYTHING I need except food for my dog and it's really cheap. I would suggest going that route. Canada also has really cheap dog meds (heartworm, fleas, etc.) I think I would also go back to the first vet with any leftover tablets (if there are any) and tell him you got a second opinion and they said the pills were hydrogen peroxide and DEMAND your money back. The second vet probably has in the records their findings so get a copy and show the first vet. It could have killed your dog.

most of the time vets will tell you that the medication can be purchased OTC and will rec this cuz of price diff. however most medications that are disp from the vet are human generic forms or have a label for pets. just depends. some products can only be given with a prescription, so yes you can get them at a pharmacy but may not be cheaper. and I can't imagine what or why a vet would send home hydrogen peroxide by itself. prob mixed in with something. when you go to the vet ask if this is something that can be purchased OTC for cheaper. good luck

Not a lot. Most of the meds used at the vet hospitals are actual prescription meds that you could not get over the counter at all.

What are your dogs Allergies? If you find out what they are then you can help your dog better. We have a MinPin. Who is allergic to every thing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We took all the rugs out of our house. He is Alric to the backing. I covered every thing with white sheets and rinses my clothes twice when I washed them. Then we took him for some tests. He was Alric to Red die which is in alto of dog foods. He is also Alric to a lot of different soaps that you wouldn't even think would bother him. My husband had to change the brand of soap he uses. We now have every thing fragrance free.
Start with What and that will help with the amount you have to pay for drugs to treat this;

my vet suggested benadryl and told me the dosage. I use liquid with an oral syringe. *JUST BE SURE TO ASK YOUR VET*
