The best breed for a person to own, varies according to many things. There are alot of things to take into account before getting a dog,and it should be based on research into your lifestyle and living arrangements. It should not be based on what breed has been good for another person, you want the right dog for you,not someone else.
Things to take into account include but are not limited to.
1.How big will the dog be when full grown?
2.How much exercise does the breed require?
3.How much grooming does the breed require?
4.Does the dog do well in apartments and small houses,or does it need more room?
5.What is the breeds temperament? How well does it do around children, other people, strangers, and other animals?
6.What health problems is the breed prone to?
7.How smart and easy to train is the breed? Is it good for first time owners,or does it need a more experienced owner to train it properly?
The more research a person does before getting a dog,the greater the chance they will have a well trained lifelong companion, instead of an unruly dog that ends up in a shelter, because you had no idea what you were getting into when you got it.
The site below is a good place to start,it gives a list of all breeds, and will help you answer the above questions.

There are lots of medium sized dogs so you will have to ask yourself what qualities you want in a dog. Do you want a dog to sit on your lap or one that loves to chase a frisbee? Do you have any alergies to long hair dogs? If you want an outgoing dog pick the puppy thats comes to you first and wants to play. If you want a more layed back dog, take the one who was still sleeping when you got there.
Although every dog has his own personality some traits are breed specific.
Here are some dogs that I have had or have been around and a little about what qualities I saw:
Fox Terrier- Smart as a whip but can be stubborn and spiteful, very loyal and tends to love one member of the family the most
Basset hound- mostly loves anyone who feeds them and loves to just lay around the house, has a hard time jumping on furniture
Boston Terrier- licks you a lot, snorts and loves to chew, somewhat hyper
English Bulldog: lots of vet bills, so far my neice's dog has had a surgery for cherry eye & hernia and the dog is taking pills for incontinence. You have to wipe them off with a baby wipe and sometimes wipe their behinds. Snorts a lot, difficulty breathing. That said they are really sweet and lovable.
Lhasa Apso- one of the most loyal, sweet dogs I ever had. They had a tendency to have back problems due to being long bodied.
Cocker Spaniel- hard to train, but beautiful
Irish Setter- what can I say the dog got hit 3 different times by a car....and survived I might add. But that makes me think not the brightest dog ever.
Chihuahua- fiesty and loyal. Total lap dogs. Pretty good health.
Blue tick hound dog/ welsh corgi mix (yes I know what are the chances) - I loved this dog but she chewed up tile in the hallway and dug a hole in the center of my mattress.
The only time she went to the vet besides regular check ups was when she ate leaves in the fall.
So anyway. .... like I said each dog is different but these are some of the things dog owners deal with.
There are tons of homeless dogs in the world and lots of mixed breed puppies who need a home. You will have a connection with the right dog.

What do you consider a medium sized dog? Why don't you like Poodles? I have two Standard Poodles and they are great. Maybe you need to look into them more. I have a website all about them.

Well, for some reason I don't think a poodle would be good for you. I have a dog that is a mix between a Lab and a Dachshund (crazy, I know!), and she is perfect! She looks like a large, fat dachshund, but she's still cute and the perfect apartment/small house size. You should research different breeds and pick one best for your living arrangements (if you have a yard, time to walk a dog, kids, etc.).

You should go to your local animal shelter and see what they have. Even if your looking for a purbred animal, things happen and wonderful pets get sent to shelters. Often times they have already house trained perfect sized dogs. To top that off you would be rescuing a wonderful pet from an uncertain future.
Good luck

I would recommend beagles - smart, friendly, and loving, they're one of the best breeds out there. They are quite energetic, so watch out. They're very good with kids, other pets and people. they tend to not be aggressive, and i don't know anyone who has had an issue with them. They do tend to howl alot, and need lots of exercise, so if you live in an apartment, they're a bad idea.
Cocker spaniels are also pretty good, although they are more laid back than beagles are.

ok so i won't even mention the p-word. BUT i think you should get a corgi. i just got one, and he is perfect. medium size, doesn't need alot of walks, and is absolutely adorable. they're kind of funny looking, but i think their the cutest things ever, personally. google them and you'll see what i mean. by the way...golden retriever? those aren't exactly medium size dogs. and shi-zu's? they bark constantly, it is very frustrating if you have any lack of patience whatsoever. corgi's do not bark like that, unlike most small dogs.

This is a good site for Medium Dog descriptions:
http://www.gotpetsonline.com/pictures/gallery/dogs/medium-sized-dogs/Page1/
Or you could check out your local animal shelter and give a medium sized mixed breed dog a good home.
