It sounds like an upper respiratory infection to me, not the flu. If you ever had the flu, you'd be too weak to write this much on the computer, trust me. Of course you want to up your fluids with water and juices. Lay off of the carbonated drinks because they will irritate your bladder and just cause more dehydration. Hot tea or broth (chicken) will soothe the sore throat; gargelling with warm salt water (1tsp. per cup) for a few minutes will also comfort the throat; take 2-3 aspirin with food (crackers) it will reduce the inflammation/pain and fever. As for the cough, you can take cough meds if you have them, or honey will help too. If you're running your heater in your home, it will dry out your bronchi and cause a dry cough. If you have a vaporizer use it, if not, just put out a pan of water close to your bed to keep the air moist (you can take a good hot shower and that will help also). Keep warm, get alot of rest and I'm sure you'll be feeling better in the am. If you're having yellow/green mucous coming up, definitely see a doc. If not, it will pass in a few days. Godloveya.

You probably are suffering from the demon known as the flu, I am suffering from it as I type, It hurts to breath, move or even think. The flu is a virus that unfortunatley can not be cured by any antibiotics, rest, water, warm tea, hot baths and time will help you get better. If it was strep it would be more in your throat and you would have a higher fever with few other symptoms. You can try Thera-Flu or some other product that helps with the Flu virus found at your local drug store or grocery store over the counter.

Like I said it can take anywhere from 3 to 14 days to get over it, the more you rest and take care of yourself the more you will start to feel better.

I agree mostly with what you're saying. My mum is generally of the opinion that you should only call a vet when you really can't fix something yourself, although she knows pretty much all there is to know about horse care - but I much rather know that my horse will be taken care of perfectly. It's reassuring to have a vet there. My mum is great and probably COULD fix anything that happened to my horses, but there's no guarantee. My mare got tangled in a fence on Tuesday night, she only had some superficial cuts and bruising, I could have taken care of it myself, but for all I knew there was some hidden damage that had been done and I wanted to make sure that if there was, it was taken care of. The vet came out, bandaged her up and gave her a few needles - all of which could have been done by us. However, the vet also said that depending on how much pressure there was and how long she was down for, she may lose sensation in one half of her hoof. I also know now that there is no tendon damage or anything that might cause problems later. I like to learn from vets, I know that I probably could take care of it myself a lot of the time, but I like to know that my horse is being looked after properly - I would do anything it takes to make sure my horse is taken care of. I would sell everything I own and work 3 jobs to pay for a vet bill - even if she had to be retired from an injury, it's just the right thing to do. There are some times when I won't call a vet - like if my horse has a little bit of a gunky eye I will buy something FROM the vets and then if that doesn't work I will ask the vet to have a look or if she has a little cut. My mum's friend is a vet nurse so that's helpfull, but really we only ever ask her about very minor things that we KNOW don't need a vet unless there are complications. With things that can afford to wait I usually don't call the vet out immediately, if my horse is a little bit stiff (not lame, just not quite normal) I will wait for a day and if it's not better I will call the vet out, or conjunctivitis - that one can usually be fixed with some salt water or a tube of $11 opti-kloxin - so I give that a try and then call the vet out if there is no progress in a day or two. I can determine what a horse is suffering and why about 90% of the time, so it's that's not why I think the vet is needed - I may be able to diagnose what is going wrong, but vets have more resources available to them than I do. I'm currently awaiting the vet bill for when my mare got herself tangeled in a fence - it was a call out in the middle of the night and we got some bute and penicillin as well as a tetnus because she was just past due for one - that one is going to cost me BIG and although I could have fixed it up myself, I know my mare is alright now - no guessing or waiting to see, I know that she has been well looked after, and that to me, is worth any amount of money (although I'm still praying it's not too much lol).

You probably have the flu. Add diahrrea and the chills and you will have the flu. Stay in bed as long as you can and have a rest. Drink water to keep from being dehydrated. I usually take a very hot bath so I will start sweating. This generally helps get the bad stuff out quicker. Of course if you are going to do this, you will need even more water to replenish your body.

Strep throat! Erythromycin or other antibiotic should do it. I would recommend talking to a doctor first before attempting to give yourself antibiotics: improper use can cause the evolution of resistant bacteria!

It might also be a virus. Your doctor should give you a simple test with a swab to make sure it is not a cold. If it is a cold, there isn't much that works well enough to justify the expense except wait for it to pass and get a flue shot next year.

Also, drink plenty of fluids. Soup, orange juice, that sort of thing. Rest for a day.

If it is the flu, or some other type of "cold", try green papya extract, raw ginger boiled in water (you drink as a tea), or taking enzymes.
