First rule...NEVER run! This will tell the mountain lion you are prey and it will chase you down and likely kill you! You are supposed to make yourself look bigger, open up your jacket if you are wearing one, put your arms over your head, wave your arms if necessary. Yell at the moutain lion, let it know you are a threat. If this does not work, you need to throw something at it, rocks or sticks (but keep in mind, when bending down to pick up such items, you do not want to look small, so don't stay down there too long, try to bend but don't squat). Hopefully at this point it will run away. If not, than back up slowly, never turn your back on the animal and get as far away from it as you can. If the mountain lion has cubs....you do NOT want to do the whole arm waving bit, or looking bigger as this may cause a protective mother to attack....the last thing she wants is a threat when she has cubs...in this case back up and get out of there. Only if she approaches you and makes agressive moves towards you do you then try the looking bigger approach, rock throwing etc.

1. Before you go hiking, get yourself prepared for any danger that you might encounter. ie; if it's an area known to have mountain lions then pack a 44 magnum, cell phone, perhaps a super loud air horn or 200,000 volt stun gun -well, you get the drift. Just always anticipate the worst and hope for the best. To sum it up as the Scouts say, "Always be prepared" :)
2. Enjoy the great outdoors!

The best defense against an aggressive mountain lion is to be aggressive right back: People who fight typically survive, Cotton said.
When confronted by a cougar, puffing up your size by flapping your jacket or standing close to a companion may be enough to scare it off,
"Mountain lions, because they are solitary animals, can't afford to get hurt," . "If they don't perceive something as being prey, they're going to leave it alone."

First of all, if you run, it'll trigger the cat's predatory response and it'll chase you. Probably the best thing to do is to try to make yourself look as big as possible. I don't know if being agressive would help or not. It depends on the cat's flight or fight response. It could make the cat run away or try to fight back. I don't think there's one set method to deal with situations like this.

Put your hands in the air or something over your head to make you look bigger and back away. If you run he'll probably react like he was chasing food and attack.

Hold something over your head so you appear taller. And don't run. I grew up around mountain lions, and this is what they taught us in school.
