Hi, my girlfriend and I are thinking of having sex for the first time.

Ive heard that the first time is generally awful, but we both want to make it as good as we can. Naturally, we intend to communicate our opinion to each other, but I thought some outside help might be good too.

Can anyone throw out some pointers on what common mistakes that are made by the man are, and also some Do's and Donts please? Any and all tips are appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Oh boy.
Ok, first of all, make sure the both of you are completely comfortable with remembering this for THE REST OF YOUR LIFE. If this relationship should happen to not work, do you both want to remember each other as your first? Or will it bring on thoughts of regret and why "why the hell did I do that?!"
If that's the case, may I just say ... don't do it. If things will be awkward between you afterwards, it's not really worth it in the least.
BUT, I'm gonna be positive here and say that you two really care for each other and bla bla bla, then the best thing you can do as a guy is make sure she's comfortable. It's really all about the moment. If things are awkward and you're both uncomfortable or nervous, then it's really not the best time.
The second thing you need to do is take it slow. Slooooow. And if she wants you to stop, you damn well better stop.
And use protection for Christ sakes!!

Fear is your biggest hindrance. Ignorance is the next one. Make sure of several things. Decide beforehand what you want to do. Rehearse in your clothes. Decide what you and she will do if she becomes pregnant. Every time you have sex, unless one of you is sterile, there is a chance for pregnancy...every time. Don't be afraid to use an over the counter water based lubricant. Use lots of lubricant and foreplay. When the time is right for the act, let her guide you. Maybe let her be on top of things so that she can control things in accordance with her level of comfort. Don't get in a hurry. Be ready to stop at the drop of a hat....or any other signal you two come up with. Just remember that this is irreversible. You should wait until married. The loss of virginity is permanent.

the first person the girl who said dont do it wait is really gving the right answer but not the one you want .
so here goes oral tons of foreplay go slow wait till she asks for it then talk to each other listen to her and do what she says.
after dont go running off stick around kiss and so on and tell her she is wonderfull all that kind of stuff.
again i say wait dont take that from her let her keep it
be 100% sure you have a condom and now how to put it on buy them and try putting one on as per the directions.
dont stay in after and risk well you will figure that out
and one more thing offer to wait until your married or offer to just not do it but stay with her as her bf and you two can have lots of fun fooling around do it all but not intercoarse . that is the best i can say . man i wish i really belived what i am writting here oh well but i turned down some girls in the past and now i think what an *** i was . but again that is not the right answer so wait.

Do a lot of foreplay to make sure she is aroused before you go anywhere near her private parts. To do foreplay, do a lot of kissing, hugging, caressing each other's bodies. You should probably do this AT LEAST half an hour. You will know she is aroused when she starts moaning a lot and getting more aggressive with her kissing and touching you. Then you can start taking off each others clothes and touching each other's private parts. As long as she is aroused, she will enjoy the sex. So the key is get her aroused before hand.

I commend you on wanting to make it as painless and smooth for your girlfriend as possible. The best way to achieve this is for both of you to relax. Tell her often that you love her, women are more emotional than men. Make sure your foreplay last long enough that penetration will not be forced. Enter her very slowly and gently. It will most likely hurt her if it's her first time, so be very loving and tender. Use a condom. Good luck to the both of you.

Maybe look for some advice in a magazine, such as cosmo, vanity fair, and marie clair. Other than that, make sure both of you are on the same page and really love eachother! have fun!

Don't force her. Have a word like "stop" and both of you use it if necessary...if it hurts her and she says stop, then don't force things. If you're hesitant it sounds like you're not ready, though. What's wrong with waiting and just playing until the time is right?

Be patient and gentle with her, especially at first. Make sure she's good and turned on with kisses and massage before making any serious moves. (Oral is good first for that, too). Go slow and enjoy yourselves. Make sure to use protection.

It seems to me that you have it all under control. Just make sure you have protected sex.
