My Gr. 1 son has wet himself at school a few times and he tells me two different reasons for it: he doesn't want to miss anything in the class, and he doesn't like the school bathrooms. He won't tell me what about them he doesn't like (no specifics), but he's gonna have to use them for the next 6 years! I've taken him home on one occasion and punished him (you can miss 5 minutes of class, or the whole day), I've talked to his teacher (who is getting very frustrated as well) and the principal. No one is refusing permission for him to go, he just tries to hold it so he won't have to use the bathroom, but no 6-yr-old can go all day without peeing....
What suggestions do you have for me to try? I'm reluctant to send him in a pull-up because I don't want him to be dependant on them, and he has no toilet issues at home, just at school. I'm at my wit's end! HELP!!!!!!!

I'd have to agree with Angel. Try pull-ups or diapers for a while. It may be enough to get him over this. If not he's only 6, and he'll get through it soon. He won't be dependent on diapers if he is only wearing them at school.

Thats a great question! My 6 year old is the same way - only she wont use any public toilets (with exception to the toilet at school). I have her use the bathroom before every trip to the store or restraunt, etc. But, for all day trips like the zoo or the state fair, I have to go in and litterally force her to sit on the toilet and go pee so she doesnt wet herself. I know the reason my daughter is reluctant to use toilets - she's afraid of them. She only likes the toilets that have round seats and that dont have the automatic flush. I would suggest you go to school and take him into the bathroom and have him use the toilet while your right there. That should give him the confidence to know he can do it.
Also, if he wets himself again, you can say "you used the toilet like a big boy when I was with you, Why dont you use it like a big boy on your own?" Honestly though, kids get busy and forget to take time to relieve themselves or dont realize in time that they have to go and end up peeing their pants as they're running to the bathroom. Be patient with him. And send an extra change of clothes to school with him to change into if he does have an accident.

A lot of kids don't like school bathrooms, one reason could be because they have urinals in the boys bathrooms. All I can suggest is to make sure he goes right before he goes to school and maybe discuss the fact that he doesn't like the bathroom to his teacher/principal. It might be because the bathrooms always seem so cold and the echos in there are kind of "spooky" to a small child. But I don't remember ever going to the bathroom alone in school, at that age, we used to have a set time in class where we all went to the bathrooms...

I think this is quite common in boys and girls. One of my daughters refused to go to the bathroom at school also. She would not give me specifics either. She did end up with a bladder infection because she tried to hold it until she got home. I was upset just as you are. I went to the school and learned her schedule. I talked to the teacher to see if there was a scheduled bathroom break for everyone so the kids did not have to raise their hand to go to the bathroom. She agreed to have a morning and afternoon break for the kids to go to the bathroom. This helped out tremendously. Don't.... I repeat.... DO NOT send him to school in pull-ups. The other kids will ridicule him and make fun of him. This will have a very negative effect on him that could stretch into high school years. Don't you remember little things about kids that you went to school with... like the nose picker or the body odor kid.... every one has certain things they remember and this should not be his. Good Luck!

My 7 year old daughter also refused to use the restroom at school last year. For that matter she went through a period in her life where she would not use any toilet that had a stain, hair, ring, you name it if it was even remotely dirty she refused and would hold it until she would eventually wet herself. It was sad and I felt really bad for her because she had a phobia. I talked with her pediatrician and he told me to not let her get use to wearing a pull-up. I simply made her go to school and I told her if she wet her pants then she would have no choice but to have to sit in the nurses office all day and do her work in there...it happened twice and she eventually started using the restroom at school. Even now though when we go out we have to layer the toilet seat with tissue and she wont let her bottom touch the seat at all! At home, it has gotten to the point that she cleans her own toilet in her bathroom because it suits her better. Maybe someday our children will grow out of this but until then I feel like we need to not get so upset with them and support them...imagine how THEY must feel.

My 6 three hundred and sixty 5 days previous son is the very similar way. What we've found that works nicely for him is to commence the nighttime formerly by assisting to settle him down for the nighttime-no television, he receives a tale study to him, after it really is given 15 minutes afterwards to study to himself and then that is lighting fixtures out. We also use calming song for him at nighttime. His weight-loss plan is likewise changed to have little processed ingredients and dyes. contained in the morning, we do a pre-awaken the position we get him up 15 minutes formerly he honestly receives transferring and enable him crawl into our mattress to snuggle with us. This starts him transferring and at 6:30 he's popped into the bathe. he's given until eventually the count number of three to get in, and if he makes it, he receives a frog-20 frogs and he receives a prize(the frogs is also taken away for not making it). he takes a 5 minute bathe and then receives out and receives dressed today. If he's dressed and downstairs ingesting his breakfast by 6:40 5, he receives yet another frog. He has until eventually 7 to eat his breakfast-again, he earns a frog for making it on time, then he has 10 minutes to brush his teeth, wash his face and get his shoes on and make confident his lunch is in his decrease back p.c... So, he can earn as a lot as 4 frogs contained in the morning. on the end of the week, if he has saved to the agenda all week, he can earn a particular prize, which incorporates a clean e book, or a visit to the youngster's museum. Then that is a a million/2 hour force or extra for us to get to school and characteristic him there by 7:50. we've the common printed in diverse parts of the residing house and he has a watch to make sure what time that is. yet, common, rewards, and consistency are key to him getting going contained in the morning.

This is common, it is just like a person that is afraid to travel on a plain. I can use them for urinating only and I wash my hands and take one to open the door. See there are things that make people to have these issues such as getting harassed while in the bathroom, or in my case watching someone use the bathroom and not washing his hands. It is a phobia and hopefully he will out grow this. Good luck and best wishes.

When children refuse to do things such as these, sometimes it's because they have a fear of something. In this case maybe it's a fear of the school bathrooms. When I was at that age I remember we were always sent to the bathroom in twos. Have you tried that? Maybe going with one of his classmates he's comfortable with would reassure him. Good luck.
