I have naturally dark hair. I've tried to bleach it 3 times and it's gone orangy yellow. I've also tried to pre lighten it, then colour it blonde, that also made it orangy yellow. Has anyone got any suggestions?

I suggest you take yourself to a professional hairstylist. They will probably advise you and let you know that this could potentially dry out your hair. However, if you take good care of it then it should be okay. They bleach your hair and at first it will seem orange yellow, but that is when they put toner on. It brings the color into the blonde making it the color that you want it to be.

Your hair has two primary pigments, red and blue. When you bleach it the larger pigment (blue) leaves the hair shaft first and what you are left with is red. Thus the orange color. That is your raw exposed hair. This is tricky, even to a master colorist like myself. You need a blue pigment to counteract the orange, which is opposite on the color wheel. Therefore, look for a blonde with an ashy undertone. If you pick the right one, it will be awesome. If you pick the wrong one it will look gray. This is a "color correction" and is usually given to a senior stylist because its so tricky. I say don't risk it unless you are sure you can make the right choice.

You are in for a world of deep bleaching to strip your hair to white and then apply the blond to make this work. It is hardly worth the effort or the maintenance and it KILLS your hair requiring tons of conditioning process and making you lose hair in the process. Try a nice red blond or soft brown it is easier to accomplish and less damaging as well as loads easier to maintain. If you are bent on being a blond save yourself and get a well fit wig. This advice from a plain brunette who burned, processed and finally wound up with a "Susan Powder" before I took my stylist's advice and went to a softer version of my natural color. Good Luck!

You can't color over color. If you have tried to lighten it in the past you are going to have trouble. Your only option is to go to a professional salon and have them strip (the color from) your hair. Then they can professionally give you light hair. It is more costly, but unfortunately the only good option for us brunettes.
